Job Summary/Basic Function

About This Role:
The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music at Lamar University is seeking a highly qualified candidate for Visiting Instructor or Visiting Assistant Professor (Director of Athletic Bands) beginning July 2025. In this position, the successful candidate will direct, sustain, and promote Lamar University’s marching band, The Showcase of Southeast Texas, as well as the Lamar University Basketball Pep Band. They will also serve as the conductor of the Symphonic Band, the university’s second concert band as well as teach introductory courses in instrumental conducting and marching band methods. The successful candidate will also assist the Director of Bands with the teaching and administration of a comprehensive university band program as well as assist with the recruitment and retention of talented undergraduate music majors, minors, and non-music majors for the university, department and band program. They will also assist in the coordination and production of various band program annual events such as the High School Marching Band Day, Honors Wind Symphony and Summer Band Camp.

What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities:
Teaching responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:

  • Serve as the Director of Athletic Bands, leading the Lamar University Marching Band, the university’s Basketball Pep Band, and the Symphonic Band: the university’s second concert band.
  • Teach the first instrumental conducting course for music majors in the Fall and the Marching Band Methods course in the Spring. (Other courses may be included and/or substituted based upon the candidate’s strengths and background.)
  • Additional faculty duties include student recruitment, creative/scholarly activity, and participation in departmental, college and university service.
  • Assist the department and band program in maintaining positive relationships with area school districts, junior colleges and private instructors.

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
  • A master’s degree in Music for Visiting Instructor
  • Experience teaching and directing marching and pep bands at the high school or university level
  • Experience teaching and directing concert/symphonic band at the high school or university level
  • Strong departmental citizenship and a cooperative attitude among colleagues, students and staff
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills and strong organizational, management and leadership skills
Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)
  • An earned doctorate degree in Music · An earned bachelor’s degree in Music Education
  • Experience teaching and directing marching and pep bands at the university level
  • Experience teaching and directing concert/symphonic band at the university level
  • Experience designing and generating drill for a modern corps style marching band using Pyware
  • Experience teaching university courses such as conducting, marching band methods or other courses taken by students pursuing a major in music
  • Experience teaching high school as a band director
