Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) seeks two Assistant Area Engineers, one in Kelso and one in Chehalis, WA, to support the Project Engineer in delivering highway design and construction projects that meet standards while staying on scope and budget.

We value safety, sustainability, and inclusive teamwork. Responsibilities include leading engineers, coordinating with agencies, and certifying plans, with a flexible/hybrid remote work option.

Qualifications

  • Licensed Civil Engineer in Washington or eligible to obtain WA licensure within 6 months of hire.
  • Extensive experience in transportation engineering, highway design, construction, and PS&E for complex projects.
  • Experience leading transportation projects through planning, environmental review, design, and construction.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Project Engineer in planning budget, schedule, and workforce for Capital Improvement and Preservation Program (CIPP).
  • Lead office of engineers, interns, and consultants in design and contract development per policies and standards.
  • Ensure projects meet scope, schedule, budget, and are constructible, permittable, and biddable.
  • Communicate professionally with leadership, agencies, customers and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with citizens, media, officials, contractors and consultants to plan and operate an efficient transportation system.
  • Report project status to Regional and Statewide management to improve accountability.
  • Coordinate input and resolve conflicts with internal and external partners.
  • Be prepared to certify projects using Professional Engineer stamp following WA standards.
  • Ensure environmentally responsible project delivery.
