Responsibilities

A. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATIONAL CURRICULUM
  • Work cooperatively with the Director of Residential Life, Associate Director for Residence Life and to ensure community development, which promotes a sense of residential belonging.
  • Provide personal assistance to students through advising, counseling, discipline and crisis intervention.
  • Provide leadership to staff and students in the development of a community environment. (Floor community, hall community, and connection to the campus community).
  • Facilitate the educational curriculum for the specific population of residential students: freshman, sophomores and upper-class students.
  • Assist students with issues typical to their developmental level (for ex. - transition to college or graduate school or professional field, financial concerns, stress management, study skills, selecting a major, mentoring, etc.)
  • Maintain a high level of visibility by making every effort to get to know residents in the area and attending resident and staff activities.
  • Support and acts as a resource to the Residence Hall Association and the University Honors College Program.
  • Ensure that the needs of residents, including those of minorities and special interest groups are assessed and that programs are initiated to meet those needs.
  • Ensure that community development records are maintained including hall assessments, resources, expenses, participation, etc. for future use by staff and student leaders.
B. POLICY ENFORCEMENT & DUTY COVERAGE
  • Encourage self-discipline, self-government, and respect for individual rights among residents; encourage individual assertiveness.
  • Clearly communicate Residential Life policy to staff and residents.
  • When necessary, assist RAs and GAs in confronting residents who violate policies.
  • Manage the educational discipline process for the residential area.
  • Conduct disciplinary conferences and apply sanctions when appropriate.
  • Assist with weekday, weekend, evening, and vacation duty coverage of campus.
C. STAFF DEVELOPMENT
  • Supervise 8 to 16 Resident Advisors.
  • Assist with the marketing, recruitment, and selection process of Resident Advisors.
  • Assist with the Resident Advisor training program.
  • Assist with the Staff Evaluation program.
  • Act as a liaison to other campus departments for the Office of Residential Life.
  • Represent the Office of Residential Life and the Division of Student Affairs on University Committees and participate fully in professional activities.
D. DEPARTMENTAL COMMUNICATION AND DECISION MAKING
  • Participate in regular meetings with both the Director for Residential Life, Associate Director of Residential Life, and the Residence Life Pro-Staff.
  • Conduct weekly staff meetings.
  • Attend Senior Staff meetings.
  • Serve on and chair Residential Life committees assigned by the Director of Residence Life.
  • Provide input to decisions regarding policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Keep professional staff informed about critical issues and concerns in the area.
  • Establish continuous communication with other Residential Life staff and University staff (Honors College, Public Safety, Student Life, Dining Services, etc.).
E. ADMINISTRATION
  • Coordinate the administrative functions in the area, including preparation of weekly reports, key inventories, and timely completion of forms and correspondence.
  • Assist with check-in, checkout of all residents and coordinates/cooperates with the Director of Housing on all tasks related to assignment of rooms.
  • Assist with maintenance of facilities.
  • Assess the success of Residential Life programs and research/benchmark for the Office.
  • Assist with program preparation and setup when needed.
  • Assist the Director of Residential Life in special project assignments.
  • Occasionally attend local, regional, and national workshops and meetings.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Residential life experience required.

The Area Coordinator is a full-time, live-in professional staff member within the Office of Residence Life who is responsible for the overall management, leadership, and direction of a residential area that includes two traditional residence halls and an apartment community, collectively housing over 350 students. This role is essential in supporting the University’s mission through the development of safe, inclusive, and educational living environments that promote student learning, retention, and personal growth. The Area Coordinator supervises a team of Resident Advisors (RAs), manages daily building operations, coordinates student conduct processes, and serves as a critical first responder for crises and emergencies. This individual also partners closely with facilities, campus safety, counseling, and academic support offices to ensure seamless residential experiences for students.
