Job summary

The West Suburban YMCA – Wauwatosa is seeking a part-time Swim Instructor to lead swim classes for members and guests, ensuring safety and enjoyment. You will follow the YMCA lesson program, assess progress, and communicate with families throughout each session.

Qualified applicants will hold current First-Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, be able to pass an advanced swimming test, and demonstrate strong judgment, reliability, and teamwork in a busy aquatic environment.

Qualifications

• Must pass an advanced swimming test.
• Must have a current state approved First-Aid certification and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
• Ability to exercise mature judgment and sound decision making, ensure safety of participants, and relate to people in a positive, but firm manner.
• Must be able to effectively communicate information on YMCA programs to members and participants.
• Must be observant and safety conscious.
• Minimum age for this position is 15 years. A requirement for applicants aged 15 (only) is lifeguard certification for this position.

Responsibilities

• Create an environment that is welcoming, nurturing and genuine for all members and guests.
• Exercise mature judgment and strong decision making, especially as it relates to safety.
• Develop rapport and maintain meaningful relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
• Able to work with other staff as part of a team.
• Conduct swim classes in accordance with Y of the USA Swimming Lesson Program in an enthusiastic and exciting way while maximizing swimmer participation in every class period.
• Motivate others in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through swimming and aquatics.
• Complete and turn in all class paperwork as required by supervisor.
• Communicate student progress to participants and/or their parents throughout the session.
• Maintain a positive and responsible attitude and demeanor at all times.
• Participation and satisfactory completion of in-service trainings is mandatory.
• Uphold the core values of the YMCA when interacting with people within the YMCA facilities and within the community.
• Work scheduled shifts including weekend shifts. Arrangements for substitutes must be previously approved by the Aquatics Director.
• Must be able to understand the way children learn at various ages and relate to them in a fun-loving, engaging, and captivating way.
