Job summary

Upper Valley Aquatic Center in Vermont is seeking an Aquatics Attendant & Lifeguard to oversee pool safety, surveillance, and guest experience at UVAC Main. The role includes enforcing policies, responding to emergencies, and maintaining clean, safe facilities.

Both part-time and full-time positions are available. Applicants must hold current lifeguard certification plus CPR, AED, and First Aid, and be able to work flexible hours to support outreach and program needs.

Qualifications

• Must hold current nationally recognized lifeguard certification.
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid certifications required.
• Ability to follow UVAC policies and state health regulations.
• Strong observation and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Inspect the pool and surrounding areas at the start of each shift.
• Maintain continuous surveillance to promote safety.
• Respond immediately to emergencies following procedures.
• Complete incident reports accurately.
• Build positive relationships with members, patrons, and staff.
• Enforce safety policies consistently.
• Maintain records per Health Department regulations.
• Perform routine cleaning and maintenance tasks.
• Inspect rescue and safety equipment.

Job Summary

Help create a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for everyone using the pool and aquatic facilities at UVAC. The Aquatics Lifeguard is responsible for continuous observation of the pool, deck, and surrounding areas, responding quickly to emergencies, and promoting a positive experience for members, patrons, and participants.

This position plays an important role in maintaining a clean, safe, and well-managed aquatic environment while following UVAC policies, procedures, and applicable state health regulations.

Part-time and full-time positions are available. Benefits: Eligible employees may have access to benefits based on their hours worked and applicable eligibility requirements.

Hourly Pay Range

Hourly Pay Range: $15.00-$18.14

Minimum: $15.00 Midpoint: $16.57 Maximum: $18.14

Minimum Commitment: 8 hours per week

Fall Positions: Positions available beginning in September.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect the pool and surrounding areas at the beginning of each shift and identify any potentially hazardous conditions.
• Maintain continuous, attentive surveillance of the pool and aquatic areas to promote the safety of all members and guests.
• Respond immediately and appropriately to emergencies while following UVAC emergency procedures and safety protocols.
• Complete incident reports and other required documentation accurately and promptly.
• Build positive and professional relationships with members, patrons, participants, and fellow staff.
• Consistently enforce and follow all pool, aquatic, and facility safety policies and procedures.
• Maintain accurate records as required by UVAC and applicable state Health Department regulations.
• Perform routine cleaning and maintenance tasks to help keep the aquatic facility safe, clean, and ready for use.
• Inspect rescue and safety equipment regularly and ensure necessary equipment is readily available.
• Conduct pool chemical testing at required intervals and take appropriate action based on test results.
• Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, and other team activities.

Position Requirements

Required Skills & Abilities

• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and complete required paperwork.
• Demonstrated lifeguarding skills consistent with nationally recognized standards, such as American Red Cross standards.
• Ability to remain alert, focused, and engaged throughout the entire shift.
• Ability to hear and distinguish whistles, alarms, distress signals, and other sounds associated with pool safety.
• Strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to project your voice clearly across the pool area.
• Professional, positive, and safety-focused approach when interacting with members and guests.

Education & Certification Requirements

• Current nationally recognized Lifeguard Certification (such as American Red Cross, YMCA, or equivalent).
• Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification.
• Current AED certification.
• Current First Aid certification.

Physical & Schedule Requirements

• Successful completion of the UVAC lifeguard water skills test.
• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while maintaining active surveillance.
• Ability to continuously scan and monitor all areas of the pool with clear vision.
• Ability to perform the strenuous physical activities necessary to respond to and complete a water rescue.
• Availability to attend required staff meetings and training sessions.
