The Office of Academic Affairs, URecFit and Wellness have an opportunity for part‑time, contractual Lifeguards and Lead Lifeguards (Contingent Category I Contractual Employment) in the SMC Campus Center. URecFit and Wellness is committed to enriching the academic experience as well as encouraging the physical, mindful, cultural, spiritual, emotional, and social development of the UMB community. Under general supervision, a Lifeguard will keep constant watch of patrons in the pool to ensure safety and respond quickly in the event of an emergency. The role requires excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, as well as discretion and judgment with significant consequences for error.
Responsibilities
- Maintain constant watch of patrons in the pool and enforce all safety standards.
- Act immediately and appropriately to ensure safety of patrons in the event of an emergency.
- Inspect facility and equipment regularly and report issues.
- Perform various maintenance and custodial duties as assigned.
- Perform facility checks in the locker rooms, on the pool deck, and other areas adjacent to the pool.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment.
- Attend all in‑service training and meetings.
Lead Lifeguard Responsibilities
- Uphold continuity of aquatic operations under the supervision of the full‑time exempt staff of URecFit and Wellness.
- Serve as the primary contact for all available lifeguard shifts.
- Work with the Assistant Director of Aquatics for monthly in‑service and other related training.
- Assist with department‑wide safety initiatives, trainings, and drills.
- Organize and lead lifeguard certification classes.
- Maintain constant watch of patrons in the pool and enforce all safety standards.
- Act immediately and appropriately to ensure safety of patrons in the event of an emergency.
- Inspect facility and equipment regularly and report issues.
- Respond to all Code Bravo (major accident) or Code Charlie (unresponsive/not breathing) emergency radio calls.
- Perform facility checks in the locker rooms, on the pool deck, and other areas adjacent to the pool.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment.
- Attend all in‑service training and meetings in person or virtually when appropriate.
- Maintain pool chemistry logs and patron statistics.
- Maintain pool maintenance and cleaning schedule.
- Maintain lifeguard operation inventories, i.e., lifeguard uniforms, chemical reagents, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience: N/A
Certification/Licensure: Current, valid Professional Rescuer Lifeguard certification by American Red Cross or other equivalent nationally recognized agency is required. CPR, AED, and First Aid certification is required.
Other: Complete a 100‑yard untimed, continuous swim test, 2‑minute treading, and 10‑lb brick retrieval with 20‑yard swim. Applicants must be 15 years old or older and pass a background check.
Required Skills And Abilities
- Apply basic analytical skills and operate manual and automated office equipment, personal computers, and spreadsheet software to input data; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; prepare and present working papers and supporting documentation.
- Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Current lifeguard certification including CPR, AED, and First Aid by a nationally recognized agency (American Red Cross, etc.) or willingness to obtain.
Hiring Range: Hourly rate for this position the Lifeguard is $16.00 and the hourly rate for the Lead Lifeguard is $18.22.
