Port Houston is seeking an apprentice mechanic to support installation, repair, and maintenance of equipment at the Barbours Cut Maintenance site. The program blends classroom and paid on-the-job training, typically 144 hours in the classroom and 8000 hours on the job, lasting about five years.

Responsibilities include inspecting and repairing container handling equipment, diagnosing subsystem faults, using diagnostic tools, and reading manuals and blueprints.

Qualifications

• General computer knowledge and proficiency with Word/Excel.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Commitment to safety and quick-thinking.
• Ability to follow written and oral directions.
• Comfort with heights and use of tools.
• Forklift operation as needed.
• Knowledge of safety policies and occupational hazards.
• Team collaboration and attention to detail.
• TWIC must be obtained within 30 days of appointment.

Responsabilités

• Assist in inspection, repair, and maintain mechanical equipment such as container handling units, yard tractors, forklifts, and terminal chassis.
• Assist in diagnose and repair component parts of machinery including gearboxes, hydraulic systems, brakes, and compressors; diagnose chassis components and systems.
• Utilize diagnostic tools to enter and retrieve information.
• Use hand tools, hoists, gauges, drills, and grinders proficiently for tasks.
• Assist in yard truck and chassis repair including transmissions, engines, brakes, suspensions, exhaust, and electrical systems.
• Read and use factory manuals and blueprints as required to fulfill tasks.
• Work overtime as scheduled and be available for unscheduled overtime as needed.
• Work a temporary or alternative schedule when requested by supervisor.
• Act in accordance with Port Houston core values.
• Perform other duties as required.
