Job description

Dubois Rural Electric Cooperative (Dubois REC) has been a trusted provider of reliable and efficient electrical services to the 6 counties it serves in southern Indiana since 1939. We are committed to delivering high-quality service to our members while maintaining a strong focus on community and sustainability. We are currently seeking a skilled and motivated Apprentice Lineman to join our team.

The Apprentice Lineman assists in the construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems. This position will progress through 4 years of Hoosier Energy Apprentice Training and Safety program (HEATS). This role will advance to Journeyman Lineman upon completion of the HEATS program. This role plays a key role in supporting the Cooperative’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to the community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in installing, repairing, and maintaining overhead and underground electric power lines and equipment.
  • Learn to operate line construction equipment, including digger trucks, bucket trucks, and wire pulling devices.
  • Climb poles and work at elevated heights using appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Perform switching and tagging procedures under supervision.
  • Assist in loading/unloading materials and tools and maintaining inventory on trucks.
  • Follow all safety policies, procedures, and guidelines, and attend required safety training.
  • Participate in emergency restoration work, including outages, storms, and other service disruptions, which will include after-hours and weekends.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned by management.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have an equivalent of the following education and/or experience.

  • High school or vocational school graduate or have completed the General Education Development (GED).
  • Will be required to complete the Hoosier Energy Apprentice Training and Safety (HEATS) 4-year program.
  • Experience working with an electrical cooperative is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Prefer a general knowledge of electricity and an understanding of the basic electrical theory.
  • Prefer a general knowledge of standard utility specifications and the National Electric Safety Code.
  • Must be organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to work independently and in team settings.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Frequent outdoor work required in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Monthly on-call availability for distribution line issues outside of normal work hours will be required.
  • Willingness to work on-call, overtime, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Must live or relocate within 12 miles or 30 minutes of the headquarters.
  • Occasional exposure to varying temperature conditions, including cold below 32 degrees and heat above 100 degrees.
  • Regularly exposed to high voltage, heights, and inclement weather.
  • Minimal exposure to fumes, odors, gases, chemicals, poor ventilation, dust and dirt.
  • Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Daily service territory travel is required with occasional out-of-state travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift at least 75 lbs. and frequently carry items up to 20 lbs.
  • Regularly required to stand for long periods, walk on uneven terrain, sit, use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Must be able to safely climb ladders, work at heights, and perform tasks in confined spaces.
  • Able to climb electrical pole with proper equipment.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Must possess (or be able to obtain) a valid Indiana Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
