Job summary

Fortress Safety is seeking an Application Engineer to support machine safety and interlocking products on-site in Erlanger, KY. You’ll resolve complex technical issues, support customers pre- and post‑sale, and collaborate with Sales to tailor safety solutions. Travel to customer sites is required.

The role emphasizes hands-on engineering over IT, with opportunities to grow toward Sales, Product Management, or technical leadership.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years in an application, field-service, technical-support or engineering role within industrial automation.
• Familiarity with industrial safety systems, PLCs, HMIs and automation technologies.
• Machinery electrical knowledge is a plus.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving for physical, engineered products.
• Confident written and verbal communication with customers.
• Ability to collaborate across Design, Quality, Sales and Engineering.
• Engineering degree or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert application and troubleshooting support for machine-safety interlocks by phone, email and on-site.
• Manage daily customer enquiries via the technical-support inbox and phone line, meeting KPIs.
• Diagnose complex product and application issues to identify root causes and fixes.
• Partner with the Sales team to help customers specify and integrate safety solutions.
• Travel to customer sites to troubleshoot and resolve issues in the field.
• Support webinars, trade shows and training sessions to drive product adoption.
• Capture customer feedback and feed real-world insight into product development.
• Build technical depth in emerging technologies including IO-Link Safety and Remlive.

Application Engineer – Machine Safety & Interlocks

Location: Erlanger / Cincinnati Kentucky (on-site, commutable)

Job Type: Permanent, full-time

Salary: $60,000–$75,000 + benefits

About the opportunity

Fortress Safety is looking for a hands‑on Application & Technical Support Engineer to support our engineered machine‑safety and interlocking products across pre‑and post‑sales. This is a physical-product engineering role, not IT / SaaS — you’ll solve real machinery challenges for customers, not troubleshoot IT systems. It’s an excellent step for an engineer looking to grow toward Sales, Product Management or technical leadership.

What you’ll be doing

• Provide expert application and troubleshooting support for our machine-safety interlocking products, by phone, email and on-site.

• Manage daily customer enquiries via the technical-support inbox and phone line, meeting agreed KPIs.

• Diagnose complex product and application issues to identify root causes and effective fixes.

• Partner with the Sales team to help customers specify and integrate safety solutions using automation‑system knowledge.

• Travel to customer sites to troubleshoot and resolve issues in the field.

• Support webinars, trade shows and training sessions to drive product adoption.

• Capture customer feedback and feed real‑world insight into product development.

• Build technical depth in emerging technologies including IO-Link Safety and electrical devices such as Remlive.

What you’ll bring

• 1–3 years in an application, field-service, technical-support or engineering role within an industrial / machinery / automation setting.

• Familiarity with industrial safety systems, PLCs, HMIs and automation technologies (hands‑on experience a plus).

• Machinery electrical knowledge or experience (beneficial).

• Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving ability with physical, engineered products.

• Confident written and verbal communication with customers.

• Ability to collaborate across Design, Quality, Sales and Engineering.

• Degree in Engineering or a relevant technical discipline — equivalent experience or qualifications also considered.
