Job description

Certain terms and conditions of employment for this position, including the rate of pay, benefits, etc., are currently subject to negotiation with the appropriate union.

Applies acquired skills and professional clinical applications concepts for small to medium-sized projects of moderate scope. Operates independently within the defined scope of responsibilities.

The APeX Beaker Analyst position will report directly to the APeX Beaker Team Lead/Supervisor and up through the APeX LIS Manager.

The APeX Beaker P2 Analyst will work in collaboration with senior Beaker analysts, other APeX application teams, clinical/business operations, and guides to enhance and maintain the Epic electronic health record. The P2 analyst provides excellent customer service to end users, tracks issues, and follows up as appropriate. Analysts will work in multiple locations, including UCSF Medical Center locations, Benioff Children's Hospitals-Oakland and San Francisco, UCSF campus, and community connect partners.

The APeX Beaker Analyst must be certified in one or more of the following Epic applications and have 1-2 years of experience with LIS application build in a hospital setting. Prior work experience at UCSF, Benioff Children's Hospital - Oakland or other academic Medical Centers is preferred.

The candidate selected for this role will be required to obtain certification within 6 months of hiring in one or both of the above applications, if not already completed. Additional certifications, such as with middleware software may also be required.

Department Overview

Health IT is responsible for all aspects of the UCSF electronic health record software, Epic, also known as Apex (Advancing Patient-Centered Excellence) for UCSF hospitals, practices, affiliates and community partners.

The APeX Beaker team falls under the Health IT department, which is responsible for the maintenance and expansion of UCSF electronic health record (Epic) and related technologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • 10% – Designs, implements, debugs and evaluates moderately complex clinical software, hardware and/or operating systems.
  • 20% – Contributes to moderately complex projects to analyze clinical workflows and create and define integrated clinical technology solutions. Organizes elements to support workflows and documentation requirements. Makes suggestions for improvements in workflows.
  • 10% – Collaborates with clinical system users to implement new releases and system upgrades. Assists in the development of business strategies and improvements in operational processes. Establishes scope and requirements for initiatives.
  • 10% – Participates in the development of new projects of moderate scope and complexity. Performs systems analysis, planning and preparation, coding, testing, implementation and client/vendor coordination.
  • 10% – Participates in user training in clinical software, hardware, and/or operating systems of limited complexity. Develops training tools and user aids.
  • 30% – Troubleshoots and documents moderately-complex issues with clinical software, hardware and / or operating systems. Performs root cause analysis, informs management and takes action. Coordinates service and support between clinical engineering, IT, networks, and outside vendors.
  • 10% – Compiles complete and concise documentation of requests. Confirms scope and requirements for initiatives.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.
  • One to two years of relevant work experience
  • Working knowledge of clinical applications systems and functions, including development, implementation, user support, maintenance, and system testing and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly diagnose problems and develop multiple options for effective and timely resolution of issues and problems.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and customer-service skills to collaborate productively on a team and to provide training and support to clinical providers and staff.
  • Detail-oriented, with demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to manage time efficiently, prioritize tasks, set schedules, and complete projects in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Demonstrated skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey technical information to clinical users in a clear and concise manner.
  • Working knowledge of departmental systems and procedures for documentation and reporting, with the ability to perform tests, analyze, and interpret relevant data.
  • Ability to work with senior staff and managers, serving as a technical resource and providing advice and counsel on issues of functionality, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, policy, and performance.

  • Certified Lab Specialist (CLS) or equivalent license
