Position Overview

The Operations Leader - Animal Care promotes and ensures the efficient and effective operations of the Companion Animal Department and drives the sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds, and small companion animals. The Operations Leader - Animal Care will coach and mentor all Pet Care Center partners in the processes to support and drive the guest experience and animal care. They are responsible for training, developing, supporting operations scheduling, and leading a high-performing team that delivers the department's sales goals, gross margin, and animal and merchandise shrink targets. They will also assist in managing all aspects of the Pet Care Center's business in accordance with Petco standards and safety procedures.

Position Responsibilities

  1. Utilize business acumen to measure, analyze, and diagnose business trends; implement improvement plans.
  2. Ensure the health and well-being of live animals according to Petco standards, policies, and procedures, including health checks and wellness documentation.
  3. Adhere to Veterinary Protocols for all sick animals.
  4. Process transactions efficiently to enhance guest experience.
  5. Implement and execute Companion Animal Operations and Aquatics through training and coaching, including regulatory compliance.
  6. Order live animals to maximize sales, margin, and inventory; analyze inventory data for improvements.
  7. Maintain operational standards in the department.
  8. Ensure all animal maintenance tasks are completed as scheduled.
  9. Maintain high presentation standards in aquatics and companion animal areas.
  10. Partner with Merchandising to ensure proper stock levels and reporting.
  11. Handle and document all adoption animals properly.
  12. Analyze sales and margin reports to guide decisions.
  13. Lead, coach, and provide feedback to all PCC partners in service quality and task performance.
  14. Ensure proper partner scheduling to meet in-stock and guest service goals during peak times.
  15. Engage in talent management activities including recruiting, hiring, training, coaching, and succession planning.
  16. Provide excellent customer service by understanding guest needs and sharing product knowledge using our selling strategy.
Other Essential Duties

  • Promote safety policies and procedures to protect partners, guests, and pets.
  • Foster a collaborative culture that encourages ideas and efficiency improvements.
  • Prioritize talent development to ensure a strong team capable of meeting company objectives.
  • Represent Petco's brand positively and lead with high standards in a fun working environment.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent; college courses in business/management preferred.
  • At least 1 year of management experience required; 2+ years preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Proficiency in communication, organizational, and computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong business, finance, analysis, problem-solving, and people development skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate guest service excellence and instruct others effectively.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Supervise Operations Specialists & Senior Aquatics Specialists.
  • Support Pet Care Center operations as a Leader on Duty.
  • Ensure safety, attendance, and operational procedures are followed.
Work Environment

This role requires support during key hours, including weekends, mostly indoors but with some outdoor activities. Physical requirements include bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and standing for long periods. Some travel may be necessary.

Contacts

This position involves regular contact with the public, other departments, distribution centers, and external vendors for various operational activities.
