Position Summary

The College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University is seeking an American Sign Language Interpreter in Boca Raton, FL. The OPS Part-Time ASL Interpreter provides American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services to support a deaf faculty member within the College of Medicine. The interpreter will facilitate effective communication during meetings, presentations, conferences, research activities, trainings, and other university-related events.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Provide accurate and professional ASL interpretation services for faculty meetings, presentations, seminars, and departmental events.
  • Interpret communications involving medical education, healthcare, scientific research, and academic discussions.
  • Facilitate communication between the faculty member and colleagues, students, researchers, healthcare professionals, and external collaborators.
  • Review meeting materials and presentation content in advance when available to ensure familiarity with technical terminology and subject matter.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding research activities, patient-related information, and university business in accordance with applicable privacy and confidentiality requirements.
  • Collaborate with faculty and departmental staff to coordinate interpretation needs and scheduling.
  • Attend in-person and virtual meetings as needed.
  • Adhere to the professional standards and code of ethics established by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English required.
  • RID Certification (NIC or CI/CT), or equivalent professional credentials required.
  • Experience providing ASL interpretation services in higher education, healthcare, medical, scientific, or research settings required.
  • Strong knowledge of professional interpreting practices and ethics required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills required.
  • Ability to accurately interpret complex medical and scientific terminology required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are essential for success in this position required.
  • Exceptional customer service, organizational and time management skills required.
  • Experience in a higher education institution, medical school, or hospital highly preferred.
Salary

Salary: $55.00 Hourly.
