Job summary

Backcountry is seeking a Principal Engineer, Application Development to own architecture and standards across our e-commerce platform powering multiple brands. You will lead a team of developers delivering fulfillment and order management systems with AI-powered enhancements.

Reporting to the Sr. Director of IT, you will drive improvements in platform velocity, reduce technical debt, and mentor engineers while collaborating with product, design, and operations to ship capabilities reliably.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software development experience, with a strong e-commerce fulfillment background.
• Experience leveraging AI tooling to accelerate development.
• Deep expertise in Java, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, and Node.js.
• Strong understanding of software architecture and enterprise-scale design patterns.
• Relational databases and SQL, including query optimization.
• NoSQL and document-oriented databases.
• Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD tooling.
• Experience with cloud platforms, specifically AWS or GCP.
• Proven track record leading software teams delivering production-grade software.
• Excellent English communication with stakeholders.
• Strong problem-solving and creative thinking under constraint.

Responsibilities

• Spearhead AI innovation by designing AI workflows to empower engineering teams.
• Design, develop, and maintain fulfillment systems powering the e-commerce platform.
• Lead a small team of developers with clear technical direction and accountability.
• Surface clean API documentation, observability, and alerting for high dependability.
• Collaborate with product, design, and operations to ensure timely delivery.
• Design and implement agentic quality gates for rapid iteration with safety nets.
• Mentor engineers at all levels on best practices.
• Represent Backcountry's values through technical decisions and team interactions.
