Job summary

Backcountry seeks a Principal Software Engineer to serve as a technical authority for its ecommerce platform, setting architectural direction and leading complex initiatives. The role emphasizes frontend depth and backend collaboration to deliver end-to-end solutions for millions of customers.

You will partner with product, design, and engineering leadership to drive scalable, high-quality features, while mentoring engineers and raising the bar for AI-enabled development across the organization.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software development experience.
• Frontend expertise with JavaScript/TypeScript, React, HTML, CSS.
• Backend with Java/Spring Boot/Node.js/Python/C#, APIs.
• Strong understanding of web performance, accessibility, and scalable UI architecture.
• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases.
• Hands-on with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with AWS or GCP and cloud-first architecture.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of scalable, high-quality customer-facing experiences across our ecommerce platform.
• Drive frontend architecture and implementation focused on performance, usability, and accessibility.
• Partner with Product, Design, and Engineering leadership to deliver intuitive features that drive business value.
• Lead end-to-end software delivery lifecycle: architecture, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
• Collaborate with backend and platform teams to design reliable APIs and integrations.
• Spearhead AI innovation, using tools to improve engineering throughput and reliability.
• Mentor engineers, review code, and influence technical direction across teams.
• Champion modern engineering practices: components, tests, observability, and clean design.
• Produce documentation including TRDs and onboarding materials.
