Job summary

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking an AI/ML Engineer to lead the IV&V and Data Curation Center of Excellence within ARL. You will drive data labeling, governance, and scalable data pipelines for classified and open-source data, collaborating with researchers and program sponsors.

You will mentor a team of engineers, establish standards, and push automation while operating in an Agile environment on site in State College, PA or Reston, VA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS/Engineering/Data Science or related field.
• Extensive experience with data curation/annotation or IV&V workflows for AI/ML.
• Strong ML fundamentals and understanding of data quality and labeling impacts on model performance.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL for data manipulation and pipeline development.
• Experience with CVAT/Label Studio labeling tools.
• Strong communication and organizational skills in collaborative environments.

Responsibilities

• Serve as technical lead for IV&V and Data Curation Center of Excellence, setting standards and direction.
• Mentor and coordinate engineers performing data labeling, curation, and IV&V across modalities.
• Establish data governance, labeling guidelines, and QA processes for reproducibility at scale.
• Design and oversee data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, QA, and cataloging.
• Lead IV&V on datasets and model outputs, defining acceptance criteria.
• Translate data needs into actionable plans and present findings to leadership.
• Evaluate tools and best practices for annotation, versioning, and metadata management.
• Drive automation of data analysis and curation to improve efficiency.
• Architect and maintain data catalogs and access-controlled repositories.
• Work within an Agile development environment in a large research team.
