Job summary

The Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University is seeking an AI/ML Engineer to lead the IV&V and Data Curation Center of Excellence within the Visualization and Decision Support Division of A2SO. You will drive data labeling, governance, and scalable data pipelines across classified and open sources.

State College, PA or Reston, VA are the work locations, with a DoD SkillBridge-friendly environment and opportunities to shape data strategy for ML systems in operational settings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Science, Engineering, or related field.
• Extensive experience designing and managing data curation, annotation, or IV&V workflows for AI/ML systems.
• Deep understanding of machine learning fundamentals and data quality impact on models.
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL for data manipulation and pipelines.
• Experience with data annotation tools such as CVAT or Label Studio.
• Proven ability to communicate effectively across teams.

Responsibilities

• Serve as technical lead for IV&V and Data Curation Center of Excellence, setting priorities and driving direction.
• Mentor and coordinate engineers in data labeling, annotation, curation, and IV&V across data modalities.
• Establish annotation standards, data governance, and QA processes for reproducibility at scale.
• Design and oversee data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, QC, and cataloging of data.
• Lead IV&V efforts on datasets and model outputs with acceptance criteria.
