Job summary

Applied Research Laboratory at the Penn State University is seeking an AI/ML Engineer to join the IV&V and Data Curation Center of Excellence. The role focuses on hands-on work with classified and open-source multi-modal data, building pipelines, annotation frameworks, and quality assurance within a secure research setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a technical field such as CS/DS/Info Science or engineering.
• Strong Python and SQL skills for data manipulation and pipeline development.
• Familiarity with data annotation tools and workflows (CVAT/Label Studio).
• Understanding of ML concepts and data quality impact on model training and evaluation.

Responsibilities

• Label, annotate, and curate multi-modal datasets (imagery, geospatial, AIS, text) for AI/ML model work.
• Build data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, quality control, and cataloging of data.
• Develop annotation standards, labeling guidelines, and data governance processes.
• Perform IV&V on datasets and model outputs to ensure data integrity and suitability.
• Collaborate with scientists, developers, and stakeholders to identify data needs and priorities.
• Create and maintain data catalogs, metadata schemas, and access-controlled repositories.
• Use Python, SQL, and annotation platforms to automate labeling, analyze data, and build metrics.
• Document data provenance, lineage, and limitations to support reproducibility and responsible AI.
• Work within an Agile team in a large research environment.
