Applied Research Laboratory at the Penn State University is seeking an AI/ML Engineer to lead IV&V and the Data Curation Center of Excellence in State College, PA or Reston, VA. The role guides data labeling, curation, governance, and model evaluation to ensure reliable AI/ML outcomes.

The position requires expertise in data pipelines, labeling strategies, and collaboration with researchers to translate data needs into actionable plans for DoD-relevant projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Science, Engineering, or related technical field.
• Extensive experience designing and managing data curation, annotation, or IV&V workflows for AI/ML systems.
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL for data manipulation, pipeline development, and analysis.
• Experience with data annotation tools and platforms (e.g., CVAT, Label Studio, or equivalent).
• Experience working in Agile development environments.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the technical lead for the IV&V and Data Curation Center of Excellence, setting priorities and driving technical direction.
• Mentor and coordinate a team of engineers performing data labeling, curation, and IV&V across multiple data modalities.
• Design and evolve data governance frameworks, labeling guidelines, and quality assurance processes.
• Design and oversee data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, quality control, and cataloging of data.
• Lead IV&V efforts on datasets and model outputs, defining acceptance criteria and fitness-for-use standards.
• Translate data needs into actionable plans and present findings to leadership.
