Job summary

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company (BHSI) invites you to join the AI & Emerging Technology team in Boston for a 12-week paid internship. You'll work with colleagues across underwriting, claims, operations, and finance to explore practical AI applications in daily workflows.

Through hands-on projects, you'll prototype automations, evaluate tools, document code, and help teams adopt effective AI solutions while practicing responsible AI with data privacy and governance.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a STEM degree or prior experience with technology.
• Hands-on experience using generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot).
• Interest in understanding how people work and solving problems.
• Familiarity with REST APIs, MCPs, Git, and cloud platforms is a plus.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Curiosity and ability to learn new tools quickly.
• Effective written and verbal communication; ability to explain technical ideas to non-technical audiences.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Attention to detail and accuracy.
• Experience with MS Office applications.
• All candidates must have permanent work authorization in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Meet with colleagues across the business to learn workflows and identify AI-enabled tasks (drafting, summarizing, researching, reviewing documents).
• Experiment with AI tools and approaches, recommending suitable options.
• Build prototypes and automations using AI platforms and APIs (assistants, summarization, extraction).
• Write, test, and document code with guidance from engineers.
• Create how-to guides, prompts, and demos; support training and office hours.
• Track impact of AI solutions (time saved, quality, user feedback) and share findings.
• Stay informed about new AI tools and assess relevance for BHSI.
• Apply responsible AI practices including data privacy and human review of outputs.
• Take ownership of tasks and complete them independently and with the team.
• Participate in team processes, discussions, and meetings; communicate progress and blockers.
• Present work to technology and business leaders at internship end.
