Job summary

OpenAI Foundation is seeking an AI Deployment Engineer in San Francisco to advise grantees on identifying, prototyping, and deploying AI use cases that advance humanitarian impact. You will work directly with nonprofit leaders and technical teams to move ideas from concept to production, selecting or building tools that fit their needs.

As an early technical hire, you will help design workflows, prototype internal tooling, and translate grantee deployments into reusable guidance for the broader

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience.
• Proficient in Python, Java, C++, and TypeScript/JavaScript.
• Experience with AI/LLM tools and real-world tooling.
• Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Experience owning end-to-end projects in resource-constrained settings.
• Founder/founding engineer experience is highly valued.

Responsibilities

• Partner with nonprofit grantees to identify practical AI use cases and deploy them.
• Advise on tool selection, architecture, workflow redesign, evaluation, safety, and data handling.
• Prototype demonstrations, reference implementations, integrations, and lightweight production systems.
• Pressure-test assumptions during grant design to align funding with feasible paths.
• Develop reusable tools for deploying AI responsibly in nonprofits.
• Synthesize grantee insights to inform product, tooling, and grantmaking strategy.
• Build relationships across nonprofit and philanthropy ecosystems.
