This position may be filled as Safety Compliance Officer (SCO) Trainee if no fully qualified SCOI candidates are available. The starting salary for a SCO Trainee is $55,823, and for a fully qualified SCOI is $61,000.
The North Carolina Department of Labor promotes worker health, safety, and well-being through various programs and enforcement. The Occupational Safety and Health Division (OSH Division) oversees compliance inspections, hazard assessments, and training activities statewide, including specialized inspections of migrant farmworker housing.
This is an entry-level role in a 36-month training program as a Safety Compliance Officer Trainee. The trainee will receive supervised on-the-job training, with prospects for advancement to a Safety Compliance Officer I position upon successful completion.
The role involves identifying workplace hazards, recommending citations, inspecting establishments, and investigating incidents. The position is based in the Agricultural Safety and Health Bureau, with responsibilities including inspections of migrant farmworker housing and conducting safety training.
This is a telework position requiring a home office setup with high-speed internet. Extensive travel throughout North Carolina is required, with overnight stays. Applicants must reside in Guilford, Mecklenburg, or Wake County, or nearby counties within 15 minutes of a major highway.
Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, industrial management, engineering, or related field plus two years of safety inspection experience, OR associate’s degree plus four years of experience, OR equivalent combination. Applicants enrolled in an eligible degree program will be considered if they will complete all degree requirements by the end of the current semester.
Foreign degrees require credential evaluation for U.S. equivalency through NACES or similar organizations.
