Job summary

The New York Public Library is hiring tutors for the NYPL After School program at the Todt Hill-Westerleigh Library. Tutors provide free, drop-in homework help and enrichment for 6–12-year-olds, Monday–Thursday afternoons, 16 hours per week, with orientation sessions before the start of the program year.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree OR current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program with at least two years completed
• Experience working with children/teens in formal or informal educational settings
• Ability to engage with children ages 6-12 and communicate with caregivers and staff
• Comfort delivering math, science, reading, and social studies support in group and one-on-one settings

Responsibilities

• Oversee After School homework help and enrichment for 6–12-year-olds (Mon–Thu, 2–7 PM)
• Welcome and engage children in drop-in activities
• Deliver flexible academic support across core subjects
• Communicate with parents and refer to branch staff as needed
• Manage attendance, statistics, and distribution of program supplies
• Coordinate with branch and central staff to share feedback and address challenges
• Design engaging enrichment activities to foster reading and learning
• Support Youth employees from the Teen Reading Ambassadors program
• Collaborate with the Children’s Librarian and other staff
• Attend meetings and trainings for information exchange
