Job summary

New York Public Library is seeking tutors for the NYPL After School program at the Pelham Bay Library. The role provides 16 hours per week of afternoon tutoring for children ages 6–12, with drop-in homework help and enrichment in a busy, public library setting.

The program runs the 2025-2026 term from September 14, 2026 to June 9, 2027, with orientation August 31–September 11. Tutors may be assigned to nearby branches as staffing needs arise; work Monday–Thursday, with some additional meetings.

Qualifications

• Ability to engage and communicate with children ages 6-12 and their caregivers
• Ability to multitask and work flexibly in a busy public library environment
• Strong understanding of basic elementary math, science, ELA, and social studies concepts
• Proficiency with Google Applications and Microsoft Office Suite

Responsibilities

• Oversee After School homework help and enrichment Monday-Thursday 2–7 PM
• Welcome and engage children ages 6-12 in drop-in activities
• Deliver academic support across math, reading, science, and social studies
• Communicate with parents/caregivers and refer to staff for resources
• Manage attendance, statistics, and distribution of supplies
• Coordinate with branch staff and attend meetings to share feedback
• Design engaging enrichment activities to foster a love of reading
• Support Teen Reading Ambassadors and other staff in activities
• Assist Children’s Librarian and staff with program needs
• Attend trainings and fulfill other duties as assigned
