Job summary

YM & YWHA of Washington Heights & Inwood seeks an After School Group Leader for the Middle School program at P.S. 173 and related partners in New York, NY. The role focuses on academic tutoring and assisting lead instructors in STEM, leadership, sports and the arts.

The position is part-time, with hours from 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, offering flexible scheduling within the 15–20 hour weekly range. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential.

• Genuine interest in working with culturally diverse 6th-8th Grade students, and able to promote positive character development.
• Strong academic skills and knowledge of New York state standards and test preparation.
• A sincere desire to effect positive social and academic change in the lives of NYC youth.
• Well-organized, reliable, and punctual.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Can work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Comfortable to learn and model universal Jewish values while working in and with a large, diverse population.

Responsibilities

• Provide academic tutoring and supervision to students.
• Organize, lead, and promote the students' interest and participation in the activities offered by you or the program.
• Supervise groups of students while maintaining their physical and emotional safety and health.
• Foster an atmosphere of fun and learning, and serve as a role model to students.
• Always conducting yourself professionally and maintaining appropriate boundaries.
• Establish and enforce rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order among the students.
• Maintain effective classroom management that encourages full participation and student growth.
• Closely coordinate with the Program Director and coworkers for any programmatic changes or any other issues or concerns.
• Participate in staff meetings, program evaluations, program improvement, and professional development training throughout the school year.
