Job summary

Roanoke County, VA is seeking a skilled supervisor for the youth recreation program. The role involves supervising Activity Leaders, organizing activities for children aged 5–12 and youth 11–13, and ensuring safety and adherence to program standards.

The position requires 21.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with a focus on planning, supervision, and parent communication. Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification and a Virginia driver’s license are required.

Qualifications

  • High school education or equivalent with childcare training.
  • Three or more years of programmatic experience with children ages 5–12 and/or youth 11–13, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
  • Must have and maintain Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificates; valid Virginia driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and actively participate with staff and children in activities such as games, music, arts, crafts, and playground activities.
  • Observe all activities to ensure safety of participants.
  • Provide a positive, authoritative approach to guiding behavior with age-appropriate limits.
  • Encourage children to take responsibility for their role in the classroom community.
  • Organize and plan structured childcare and recreational activities for ages 5–12 and/or 11–13 in a group setting.
  • Communicate with parents regarding behavior issues and work toward resolution.
  • Ensure children have proper rest periods.
  • Supervise an assigned shift of employees; train staff; plan, assign and direct work; evaluate performance and address complaints.

Job description

Performs responsible skilled recreational and supervisory work in accordance with the program standards for children and/or youth at an assigned locationSupervises Activity Leaders to include organizing, planning and participating in recreational activities with children ages five (5) through twelve (12) and/or youth ages eleven (11) through thirteen (13).Maintains required records, collects fees and prepares deposits. Performs other duties as assigned.

*Shift Hours and/or Days worked: Monday-Friday, 1:45-6:00pm

*Hours Required for this position: 21.25

  • Plans and actively participates with staff and children in activities including games, music, arts, crafts, and playground activities, as well as other appropriate activitivities
  • Observes all activities to ensure the protection and safety of all participants
  • Provides a positive and authoritative approach to guiding behavior using age-appropriate limits and choices
  • Encourages children to take responsibility for their role in the classroom community
  • Organizes and plans structured childcare and recreational activities for children five (5) through twelve (12) in a group environment in accordance with program standards
  • Communicates with parents regarding behavior issues and works with parents to facilitate resolution
  • Ensures children have proper rest periods
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists with orientation of participants and program promotion
Education
  • Required:High school education or equivalent supplemented with college level courses or training in a childcare related field
Experience
  • Required:Three (3) or more years of programmatic experience, in a regulated program with children ages five (5) through twelve (12) and/or youth ages eleven (11) through thirteen (13), which has been obtained after the age of sixteen (16).Of the three years, one (1) year must be in a staff supervisory capacity
  • Preferred:One (1) or more years appropriate experience in the group care of children ages five (5) through twelve (12) and/or youth ages eleven (11) through thirteen (13)
Certifications/ Licenses
  • Required:Must have and maintain Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificates or obtain same after employment.Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge, skill and interest in recreational activities suitable for children ages five (5) through twelve (12) and/or youth ages eleven (11) through thirteen (13) in a group setting
  • Ability to deal effectively with participants, encourage participation in the various activities; and to develop and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, participants and the general public
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and adhere to program rules and objectives
  • Ability to maintain order, enforce rules and follow discipline procedures
  • Ability to plan, direct and evaluate the work of others
Additional Requirements

Must be age twenty-one (21) or older. Subject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search with acceptable results.Following a conditional offer of employment, must submit to a Tuberculosis test.Must also be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.
