Job summary

Roanoke County, VA is seeking staff to perform recreational and clerical work for children and youth at assigned locations. You will organize and schedule activities for ages 5–12 and 11–13, including games, music, arts and crafts, and collect fees.

The role requires supervising activities to ensure safety and a positive, age-appropriate approach to behavior. Hours are Monday–Friday, 1:45–6:00pm (21.25 hours weekly).

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent with college courses or six months’ programmatic experience with children 5–12 and/or 11–13 preferred.
Some experience working with children in a structured environment preferred.
Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license and current Red Cross First Aid/CPR certificates or obtain them after employment.

Responsibilities

Plan, organize and participate in games, music, arts and crafts, playground and other activities.
Supervise all activities to ensure safety of participants.
Collect fees as applicable.
Provide positive, age-appropriate guidance and establish classroom community rules.
Encourage children to take responsibility and participate actively in activities.

Job description

Performs responsible recreational and clerical work in accordance with the program standards for children and/or youth at an assigned location. Responsible for organizing, planning and engaging in organized recreational activities with children ages five (5) through twelve (12) and/or youth ages eleven (11) through thirteen (13). Organizes and schedules activities to include appropriate games, music, arts and crafts. Collects fees. Performs other duties as assigned.

*Shift Hours and/or Days worked: Monday-Friday, 1:45-6:00pm

*Hours Required for this position: 21.25

Provides a positive and authoritative approach to guiding behavior using age-appropriate limits and choices

NON-ESSENTAIL JOB FUNCTIONS

Education

Required: High school diploma or equivalent supplemented with college level courses or six month’s programmatic experience with children ages five (5) through twelve (12) and/or eleven (11) through thirteen (13).

Experience

Preferred: Some experience working with children in a structured environment.

Certifications/ Licenses

Required: Must have current Red Cross First Aid and CPR certificates or obtain same after employment. Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of recreational activities suitable for children ages five (5) through twelve (12) in a child care setting and/or youth ages eleven (11)through thirteen (13).
Ability to deal effectively with participants, encouraging participation in the various activities; and develop and maintain effective relationships with other employees, activity participants and the general public.

Additional Requirements

In accordance with State licensing requirements, must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. Subject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search with acceptable results. Following a conditional offer of employment, must submit to a Tuberculosis test. Must also be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
