Job summary

Barnes Aerospace in Warren, MI seeks a skilled machinist to set up and operate manual VTLs and lathes for aerospace parts. You will read blueprints, verify dimensions, and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

The role requires 3–5 years of aerospace machining, strong GD&T and math skills, and the ability to work with engineering on part positioning. Willingness to learn CNC basics and work overtime as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 3-5 years of experience machining in an aerospace environment.
• Three or more years setting up and operating Manual VTLs and manual lathes.
• Familiar with VTL and manual lathes such as Mazak, Mori-Seiki and Leblond.
• Experience machining plasma coatings and K/E seals on rotating aircraft parts.
• Strong math skills and knowledge of GD&T.
• Familiar with SPC.
• Willing to learn basic CNC programming.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities; able to work collaboratively.
• Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word.

Responsibilities

• Perform complex set ups and edits on established and NPI jobs with minimal supervision.
• Verify dimensions with micrometers, depth gauge, height gauge and vernier.
• Read and interpret blueprints and operations sheets.
• Familiar with Lean practices, 6S, and a continuous improvement environment.
• Follow all safety requirements regarding machine operation including proper guarding.
• Work flexible hours and overtime to meet customer deadlines and commitments.
• Collaborate with engineering on material conditions and part positioning, tool pressure, etc.
• Detect faulty operations and materials and report issues to supervisor.
• Maintain good housekeeping on machines and in the work area; wear required PPE.
• Provide training to others as required.
