Advise NC at UNCW is a statewide program under AmeriCorps that recruits full-time Next Step Advisers to help high school students with postsecondary planning. The program serves ten high schools across multiple counties in North Carolina for the 2026‑2027 academic year.

Advisers provide individualized support, helping students explore college, employment, and military options while coordinating timelines and deadlines within a supportive school-wide framework.

Qualifications

• Education level: College graduate.
• Age 18+ required.
• Ability to commit to a 2026/2027 term (08/01/2026 – 07/30/2027).

Responsibilities

• Provide one-on-one postsecondary planning advice to students and families.
• Encourage students to consider a broad range of postsecondary options.
• Develop a comprehensive timeline for each student’s plan.
• Help students create Next Step Plans with identified actions and deadlines.
• Interpret college communications, including offers of admission and financial aid.
• Organize group events to showcase postsecondary opportunities.
• Visit classrooms and clubs to offer advising services on postsecondary options.

Advise NC is a statewide organization that assists underserved high schools by providing highly trained, full-time Next Step Advisers who provide post‑secondary planning support to students and families. Advise NC takes a whole‑school approach, educating students from all grades and backgrounds on post‑secondary options available to them, including college enrollment, employment, and military enlistment. Advise NC at UNCW is one of five founding Advise NC programs in the state. Our programs work together to strengthen our shared mission of empowering students and communities across North Carolina, ensuring that all of our students served receive the support they deserve. Next Step Advisers provide individualized support to help students explore their post‑graduation options. Advise NC at UNCW will serve 10 high schools across Beaufort, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Jones, New Hanover, and Pender Counties for the 2026‑2027 academic year.

Member Duties:

• Provide one‑on‑one postsecondary planning advice to any student or family seeking assistance
• Encourage each student to consider a broad range of appropriate postsecondary opportunities that align with their desired pathway
• Develop a comprehensive timeline for each student's intended plan
• Help each student create an informed Next Step Plan on their desired pathway, identifying all action items and deadlines
• Assist each student in interpreting correspondence from colleges, including offers of admission and financial aid
• Organize group events that encourage students and their families to learn about postsecondary opportunities for all pathways.
• Visit classrooms, assemblies, and club meetings to offer advising services to educate students and their families on their postsecondary options.
