Advanced Manufacturing Engineer - Industrial Automation

Full-time 22960 Venture Dr, Novi, MI 48375

Automotive, Electric Vehicles (EV), Industrial Automation

We are looking for an Advanced Manufacturing Engineer (AME) - Industrial Automation to serve as the technical backbone of our operations - translating customer engineering requirements into executable automation solutions, evaluating and qualifying supplier manufacturing capabilities, and driving continuous improvement across active programs. A hands-on, deeply technical role for an engineer who thrives at the intersection of design intent, supplier capability, and automation technology.

Role Overview

Bridge the gap between customer design requirements and internal automation engineering - evaluating manufacturability, qualifying processes and tooling, leading APQP deliverables, and driving automation-focused value engineering that improves quality, throughput, and program profitability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct DFM and DFA reviews for automation systems and precision-manufactured components
  • Analyze customer blueprints, GD&T callouts for robotic end-effectors and precision mechanisms
  • Lead APQP deliverables: PFMEAs, Control Plans, Work Instructions, Process Flow Diagrams
  • Support supplier process capability studies: Cpk/Ppk, gauge R&R, SPC implementation
  • Evaluate and support robotics integration, EOAT, machine vision, and process automation
  • Lead tooling design reviews, die tryout events, and automation system process validations
  • Define automation-specific manufacturing process standards and OEE improvement strategies
  • Drive VA/VE cost reduction initiatives targeting material, process, and design improvements
  • Support FAT and SAT: validating cycle time, repeatability, capability, and safety compliance
  • Work with BD team to present advanced manufacturing capabilities to prospective customers
  • Evaluate emerging automation: collaborative robots, AI inspection, flexible automation
  • Maintain technical documentation and engineering change management across active programs
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Mechatronics (required)
  • Master's degree or MBA a plus
  • 6+ years in industrial automation, automotive manufacturing, or capital equipment engineering
  • Demonstrated APQP deliverables: PFMEAs, Control Plans, FAI documentation per AIAG
  • Solid understanding of robotics, machine vision, assembly automation, and smart factory integration
  • Working knowledge of automation safety standards: ISO 13849, IEC 62061, ANSI/RIA R15.06
  • Experience conducting manufacturing process audits at supplier facilities globally
  • Experience supporting FAT/SAT activities for industrial automation strongly preferred
  • Deep technical expertise: knows what a robot should do vs. what it can do at the supplier
  • DFM-first engineering mindset: evaluates design feasibility before committing to build
  • Structured problem-solving: 8D, A3, PFMEA under program pressure
  • Self-driven and adaptable in a globally distributed team requiring breadth and initiative
  • Hands-on orientation: comfortable on the shop floor, in the toolroom, at a robot integration cell

Performance Bonus

5% - 15% based on program delivery, cost reduction, and technical contribution

Robotics integration, EV automation, and FAT/SAT experience considered toward $120,000+
