Job description

This position is in the adult acute care setting to help perform patient care activities. This pharmacy technician will work on the Adult Emergency Services (AES) team and may spend some time in Central Pharmacy. Primary function will be to prepare and dispense medications from the AES satellite pharmacy.

General Pharmacy Technician duties may include:
  1. Prepare and package non-sterile compounded pharmaceuticals
  2. Prepare sterile products, injections and IV chemotherapy
  3. Fill automated dispensing cabinets on nursing units
  4. Correctly distribute and account for controlled substances usage
  5. Deliver medications to nursing units including surgical rooms
  6. Stock medication shelves, manage inventory dating, return excess stock to inventory, properly dispose of expired medications or return to manufacturer
  7. Prepare and deliver investigational drugs per research protocols
  8. Respond to and triage telephone and electronic message inquiries
  9. Assist the Pharmacist with auditing controlled substance utilization
  10. Complete restocking and dispensing activities using pharmacy automation
  11. Receive orders and prepare and package medications for outside clinics
  12. Build various medication kits, supporting different professions
  13. Conduct admission medication histories
  14. Assist the pharmacist in resuscitation bays
  15. Perform pharmacy cleaning and documentation
  16. Assist with staff training
  17. Other duties and projects as assigned by supervisor
  18. Work collaboratively with Pharmacists, Pharmacy Managers, Technician Supervisors, and other medical professionals

Physical activities include lifting, pulling, bending, and manual dexterity. Must be able to follow instructions, prioritize accurately, and communicate fluently in English.

Qualifications by Technician Level:
Pharmacy Technician Associate:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License
  • Proficient communication, computer, and math skills
  • Ability to prioritize accurately
Pharmacy Technician Intermediate:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License
  • At least one year of relevant experience
  • Proficient communication, computer, and math skills
  • Ability to prioritize accurately
Pharmacy Technician Senior:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License
  • Two or more years of relevant experience
  • Proficient communication, computer, and math skills
  • Ability to prioritize accurately

Additional desirable qualifications include at least one year of technician experience or completion of a training program, and basic pharmacy calculations.

All technicians must be licensed by the State of Michigan. New hires must obtain a license before starting. Certification through PTCB is required within 6 months of hire and must be maintained throughout employment.

This is a full-time position with shifts starting at 7 am, including every second weekend and holiday coverage. Specific scheduling needs should be discussed during the interview.
