The North Carolina Department of Labor is charged by statute with promoting the health, safety and general well-being of the workers in the state. The laws and programs the Department administers affect every worker in the state. The Department is organized into three primary divisions which carry out the Department's principle regulatory, enforcement and promotional programs, and the administrative operations. The three primary divisions have divisions, bureaus and offices under each, which carry out the specific and specialized portions of the NCDOL mission. Description of Work

This position provides a variety of administrative support services for the Agricultural Safety and Health Bureau. Primary duties include performing extensive casefile management for preoccupancy migrant housing inspections and all compliance inspections/investigations assigned to the Bureau. In addition, the position is responsible for answering incoming telephone calls, drafting and typing documents, processing mail, copying and distributing information, scheduling appointments and meetings, maintaining office equipment, and maintaining inventory of office supplies. This position participates in Bureau management meetings and assists in implementing effective systems to improve work flow and productivity.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

The ability to handle multiple tasks and respond cordially and effectively to public inquiries is essential. The ability to work in a fast-paced work environment, maintain a highly organized and effective filing system and handle multiple tasks and respond cordially and effectively to public inquiries is essential. Must be able to establish and maintain working relationships with others and carry out general instructions, both written and oral. Intermediate computer skills - Microsoft Officer (Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint) are essential. Knowledge of the Migrant Housing Act/NC Agriculture/migrant farms workers and experience using the NC E-Procurement system are essential. Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly preferred.

Salary and Benefits

The maximum recruitment salary for this position is $44,393. NC 08 Salary Range $39,244.00 - $68,679.00

Work Schedule and Physical Requirements

This is an office position with a work schedule of Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds is required and a valid driver's license.

About the Agricultural Safety and Health Bureau

The Division of Occupational Safety and Health of the Department of Labor is the lead agency with the responsibility of fostering safe and healthy workplaces for employees and migrant workers in North Carolina. The Agricultural Safety and Health (ASH) Bureau’s primary purpose is to ensure the safety and health of agricultural workers in the state. The Bureau enforces the Migrant Housing Act of North Carolina and the Occupational Safety and Health Standards for Agriculture (29 CFR Part 1928). The Bureau performs preoccupancy inspections of migrant housing, conducts compliance inspections to identify safety and health hazards in the workplace, provides bilingual educational training programs for agricultural employers and their workers, and recognizes agricultural employers who provide exemplary migrant housing through the Gold Star Grower program.

Additional Responsibilities

Participates in on-farm and external training events as needed.
