Job summary

Labcorp seeks a Lab Director to join our team at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA. The role typically works Monday–Friday (8a–5p); flexibility is required.

You will lead hospital operations across the market, ensuring quality results, proper staffing, and financial vitality while fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. You’ll partner with Medical Directors and Health System leadership to align with provider and patient expectations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; 5+ years leadership in a health system or medical center.
  • Preferred: degree in Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; 10+ years lab testing experience.
  • ASCP or AMT certification preferred.
  • Experience in an academic medical center is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct hospital operations within the market to ensure quality results, proper staffing, financial vitality, and foster a team environment.
  • Ensure adherence and implementation of hospital and laboratory policies and procedures for sites within the designated market.
  • Work with hospital administration and lab leadership to meet strategic and financial objectives and explain variances.
  • Ensure labs meet established metrics; identify root causes and drive improvements.
  • Partner with Quality and oversee new test methods and procedures implementation at hospitals within the market.
  • Maintain strong customer-focused relationships and resolve operational issues proactively.
  • Collaborate with Medical Directors and Health System Leadership to meet provider and patient expectations.
  • Resolve client inquiries by consulting with leadership and other managers; ensure regulatory compliance (CAP, CLIA, State, ISO).
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of managers, supervisors, and lead technologists; foster engagement and innovation.

Job Responsibilities
  • Lead and direct the hospital operations within the market to ensure quality results, proper staffing, financial vitality, and foster a team environment
  • Ensure adherence and implementation of hospital and laboratory policies and procedures for sites within the designated market
  • Work closely with hospital administration and lab leadership in maintaining strategic and financial objectives and understand/explain variances of laboratories within the market
  • Ensure laboratories within the market are performing at established metrics – understand root cause and implement process improvements when necessary
  • Partner with Quality and oversee the implementation of new test methods and procedures at hospitals within the market
  • Maintain strong customer-focused relationships, resolving operational issues proactively and effectively
  • Work closely with Medical Directors, Professional Support Leaders, and Health System Leadership to ensure the laboratories are meeting the expectations of the providers and patients
  • Resolve client inquiries and operational issues in a timely manner by consulting with the Medical Director, Technical Director, QA, other laboratory managers, discipline directors, laboratory managers or corporate operations
  • Maintain compliance with corporate, state and federal regulatory requirements (CAP, CLIA, State, ISO, etc.) related to personnel safety and quality of laboratory testing as well as professional conduct
  • Serve as the laboratory liaison and a partner for other health system departments – promote communication and teamwork
  • Ensure effective communication with leadership, clients, corporate operations, as well as direct reports, departmental staff, and inter-departmental staff
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of managers, supervisors and lead technologists through coaching, training, and performance management
  • Foster a culture of high employee engagement, collaboration, continuous learning, and innovation within the laboratory team
  • Proactively address workplace climate to maintain a positive culture, strengthen retention and enhance team effectiveness
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5 years or more of leadership experience in a health system or medical center
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
  • 10 years or more of clinical laboratory testing experience
  • 2 years or more working in an academic intuition
  • ASCP or AMT certification
Additional Job Standards
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust, inspire engagement and cultivate a healthy workplace culture
  • Proficient in laboratory knowledge and how to effectively manage a clinical laboratory.
  • Prior experience in a high volume, large hospital environment
  • Familiar with new laboratory instrumentation and equipment automation
  • Strong working knowledge of supply chain operations and expense control
  • Ability to communicate with a heavy customer focus when working with client leadership
  • Previous experience managing multiple locations is highly preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of CLIA, CAP and relevant state regulations
  • Understanding of laboratory operations as well as policies and procedures
  • Proven success in training and developing both technical and non-technical employees
  • Strong demonstrated leadership capabilities including: emotional intelligence, excellent listening, verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

Pay Range

Pay Range: $170,000 - $210,000 + Bonus All job offers will be based on a candidate’s skills and prior relevant experience, applicable degrees/certifications, as well as internal equity and market data. The position is also eligible for an annual bonus under the Labcorp Bonus Plan. Bonuses are payable based on corporate and/or business segment performance and are subject to individual performance modifiers.

  • Employees regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week are eligible for comprehensive benefits including: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, STD/LTD, 401(k), Paid Time Off (PTO) or Flexible Time Off (FTO), Tuition Reimbursement and Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Casual, PRN & Part Time employees regularly scheduled to work less than 20 hours are eligible to participate in the 401(k) Plan only.
  • Employees who are regularly scheduled to work a 7 on/7 off schedule are eligible to receive all the foregoing benefits except PTO or FTO.
