Job summary

Southeast Community College is looking for a part-time Adjunct Instructor in Biotechnology for the 2026–2027 academic year. This role requires teaching a variety of courses and maintaining laboratory equipment in a variety of formats including online and hybrid.

Job Overview

Adjunct Instructor, Biotechnology – 2026–2027, part‑time, temporary, part of a pooled adjunct faculty posting for the 2026–2027 academic year. Under the direction of the Associate Dean and Program Chair(s), this position involves instructing students in a variety of Biotechnology courses in campus classroom, laboratory, online/remote, hybrid, and/or off‑campus settings and may also be responsible for maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Essential Functions
  • Provide instruction to students according to the objectives of each course assigned.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to individual student needs, including lectures, small groups, demonstrations, and computer‑assisted instruction.
  • Prepare and administer evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress.
  • Assist in gathering and interpreting data for department assessment.
  • Promote an environment of belonging where all students, faculty members, and college employees feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to contribute.

Additional Functions
  • Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • May perform associated duties in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
  • Work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required; hours may vary and may require work outside the regular workweek.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Current knowledge and experience in the Biotechnology field, including buffer and solution preparation, DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, micropipetting, PCR, aseptic technique, and laboratory safety. Desired additional skills include molecular cloning, protein purification, bacterial cell culture.
  • Effective oral and written communication for supervising laboratory activities with a diverse student population.
  • Maintain a conducive laboratory environment and proper laboratory guidelines.
  • Provide timely and appropriate solutions to student questions or problems.
  • Perform routine organizational tasks and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with students and staff.
  • Supervise students during laboratory times, requiring standing and walking for up to three hours.
  • Effectively communicate in writing, in person, and on the phone.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.
  • Alternative combinations of skills and abilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, can satisfy essential functions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a bioscience field (biology, biochemistry, microbiology, etc.) or bachelor’s degree in education with secondary endorsement in science, PLUS six (6) graduate hours in a related science field AND successful completion of five (5) core microcredentials from BCSI.
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in a bioscience‑related field AND two (2) years of industry experience and current experience in training or supervising, PLUS five (5) core microcredentials from BCSI.
  • Two (2) years of current work experience in a Biotechnology field related to the area of assigned duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous teaching experience.
