Classification: Exempt

Union: Adjunct

Reports To: Department Chair

Placement: Placement on salary schedule depends on qualifications.

Hiring Rate Per Contact Hour: Fall 2024 to Summer 2025: $1005.00 with Bachelor's or Master's; $1056.00 with Ph.D., Ed.D., or J.D.
Fall 2025 to Summer 2026: $1030.00 with Bachelor's or Master's; $1082.00 with Ph.D., Ed.D., or J.D.

Position Summary

An adjunct community college instructor is hired for one semester to teach one or more courses for which they are qualified. The instructor reports to the Instructional Coordinator and/or Director, providing quality instruction, assessing students, and following course guidelines. Willingness to teach at multiple campus sites is required. Preferences for locations and loads may be submitted. This position is governed by the Joliet Junior College adjunct faculty contract.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide direct instruction to students in assigned subjects.
  • Monitor student progress, report outcomes, and refer students for additional support.
  • Participate in evaluations and adhere to departmental policies, including grading, attendance, and assessments.
  • Attend classes regularly and communicate effectively with staff and administration.
  • Retain students through goal attainment and comply with legal and ethical obligations such as FERPA and ADA.
  • Support the college's mission and meet contractual obligations.
Additional Responsibilities
  1. Teach at least two courses in Microbiology or related biology fields.
  2. Collaborate with colleagues and support services for curriculum and placement decisions.
  3. Be willing to teach face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses as needed.
  4. Employ effective and innovative teaching methods.
  5. Demonstrate a commitment to the college mission.
  6. Teach at other campus sites if required.
  7. Fulfill all contractual obligations outlined in the adjunct faculty contract.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Microbiology or a closely related field (e.g., Virology, Bacteriology, Medical Microbiology).
  • Experience teaching at the college level.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and demonstrate cultural competence.
  • Commitment to the college's core values of respect, inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor, well-being, innovation, and quality.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Microbiology or a related field.
  • Experience teaching at the community college level.
  • Proficiency with instructional technologies and online course management.
  • Experience with diverse student populations and bilingual communication skills.
  • Demonstrated multicultural competence.
