Classification: Exempt

Union: Adjunct

Reports To: Department Chair

Placement: Placement on salary schedule depends on qualifications.

Hiring Rate Per Contact Hour: Fall 2024 to Summer 2025: $1005.00 with Bachelor's or Master's; $1056.00 with Ph.D., Ed.D., or J.D.
Fall 2025 to Summer 2026: $1030.00 with Bachelor's or Master's; $1082.00 with Ph.D., Ed.D., or J.D.

Position Summary

An adjunct instructor is hired for one semester to teach courses for which they are qualified. The instructor reports to the Instructional Coordinator and/or Director, providing quality instruction, assessing students, and following course guidelines. Willingness to teach at multiple campus sites is required. Preferences for locations and loads can be submitted. This position is governed by the Joliet Junior College adjunct faculty contract.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide direct instruction in assigned subject areas.
  • Monitor student progress, report outcomes, and refer students for additional support.
  • Participate in evaluations.
  • Follow departmental curriculum, grading standards, attendance policies, textbook choices, assessments, and other processes.
  • Attend classes regularly and communicate effectively with staff and directors.
  • Retain students through goal attainment.
  • Comply with legal and ethical obligations, including FERPA, ADA, and other regulations.
  • Align with the college's mission, goals, and values.
  • Meet contractual obligations as per the adjunct faculty contract.
Additional Responsibilities
  1. Teach at least two courses in Microbiology or related biology fields.
  2. Collaborate with instructors and support services for curriculum and placement.
  3. Be willing to teach face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses.
  4. Employ effective and innovative teaching methods.
  5. Demonstrate commitment to teaching and learning.
  6. Teach at other campus sites as needed.
  7. Fulfill contractual obligations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Microbiology or a closely related field (e.g., Virology, Bacteriology, Medical Microbiology).
  • Experience teaching at the college level.
  • Ability to establish cooperative and effective relationships, showing cultural competence and emotional intelligence.
  • Commitment to the college's core values of respect, inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor, well-being, innovation, and quality.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Microbiology or a related field.
  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Technology proficiency for instruction.
  • Experience teaching online and using course management systems.
  • Experience with diverse student backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish (verbal and written).
  • Multicultural competence.
