Job summary

The Herald Group in Washington, DC is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to join our growing firm. This visible, hands-on role supports the Controller across accounting operations and financial reporting, with ownership of core processes from day one.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, GAAP expertise, and strong Excel/QuickBooks Online skills. The position offers a hybrid work schedule with competitive benefits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred but not required.
• Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience with supervisory experience.
• Strong knowledge of general ledger processes, reconciliations, and month-end close.
• Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and advanced Excel (PivotTables, charts, data analysis).
• Solid knowledge of GAAP, financial regulations, and internal controls.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal guidance and manage multiple deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the general ledger, including journal entries and account analysis.
• Execute monthly close processes and ensure timely periods closing.
• Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
• Prepare weekly and monthly account reconciliations.
• Assist with management reporting, variance analysis, budgeting, and forecasting.
• Monitor cash flow and flag unusual activity to Controller.
• Participate in accounts payable and accounts receivable activities.
• Assist auditors and support internal controls and process improvements.
• Document accounting policies; support automation initiatives with Excel/AI tools.
