JOB TITLE: Accounting Manager

REPORTS TO: CFO

SUPERVISES: Accounts Payable and Procurement Senior Accountant, Revenue and Accounts Receivable senior Accountant, FP&A Senior Accountant

COMPENSATION: $125k - $140k

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Position Overview

The Accounting Manager serves as the operational leader of the accounting function and the anchor of the organization’s financial integrity. This role oversees day-to-day accounting operations while owning the monthly close process, balance sheet integrity, financial reporting, and internal control structure.

The Accounting Manager will directly supervise:

  • AP & Procurement
  • Revenue and Receivables Senior Accountant
  • FP&A Senior Accountant

This role requires strong nonprofit GAAP knowledge, audit experience, disciplined reconciliation practices, and confident leadership presence.

Reconciliations are expected to be systematic, timely, and precise — not reactive.

Core Ownership Areas
  • Own and enforce the monthly and year-end close calendar
  • Ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled and reviewed monthly
  • Approve journal entries and postings in accordance with policy
  • Review and finalize monthly financial statements
  • Oversee net asset tracking, including donor-restricted and board-designated funds
  • Maintain and strengthen internal control documentation
  • Lead and develop accounting staff
Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise daily accounting operations across A/P, Procurement, A/R, Revenue, and G/L.
  • Establish accountability standards for accuracy, timeliness, and documentation.
  • Review monthly balance sheet reconciliations and enforce reconciliation discipline across the team.
  • Oversee preparation of financial statements prior to submission to the Vice President of Finance.
  • Drive process improvements and strengthen internal controls.
Accounts Payable & Procurement Oversight
  • Oversee vendor management, purchasing compliance, and disbursement cycles.
  • Ensure procurement policies are followed and approvals are documented.
  • Monitor cash disbursements and safeguard internal controls.
  • Oversee billing and collections for tuition, grants, contributions, and auxiliary/event revenues.
  • Monitor aging reports and improve collection processes.
  • Ensure proper revenue recognition in accordance with GAAP and donor requirements.
Fund, Revenue & Auxiliary Accounting
  • Oversee accounting for:
  • Tuition and student-related fees
  • Grants and contracts
  • Contributions and donor-restricted funds
  • Auxiliary and events operations (facility rentals, conferences, catering, ticketed events)
  • Ensure proper tracking and release of net assets with donor restrictions.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Development, Sponsored Programs, and Events teams.
Month-End and Year-End Close
  • Oversee full-cycle close, including accruals and adjusting entries.
  • Review balance sheet accounts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Support preparation of year-end audit schedules and required filings.
Compliance & Audit
  • Ensure adherence to nonprofit GAAP, OMB Uniform Guidance, and grant requirements.
  • Maintain accounting policies and procedures documentation.
  • Strengthen segregation of duties and internal control frameworks.
