Job summary

A growing organization in the Bethesda, Maryland area is seeking an experienced Operational Accounting Manager to join its finance leadership team. This role drives accounting excellence, overseeing month-end close, GAAP-compliant reporting, and cross-functional finance initiatives in a fast-paced environment.

You will mentor staff, lead process improvements, coordinate with external auditors, and support budgeting, forecasting, and ERP optimization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 4+ years of progressive accounting experience with 2+ years in public accounting preferred.
• Strong GAAP knowledge and financial reporting experience.
• Experience leading month-end close and cross-functional partnerships.

Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day operational accounting activities including general ledger, reconciliations, accruals, and month-end close.
• Oversee and review financial reporting packages for accuracy and timeliness.
• Lead accounting process improvements and streamline workflows across the finance function.
• Partner with operational and executive leadership to support business initiatives and financial decision-making.
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff while fostering a collaborative team environment.
• Ensure GAAP compliance and internal accounting policies.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
• Coordinate with external auditors and support year-end audit activities.
• Analyze financial data and provide actionable insights to leadership.
• Support ERP implementation or optimization and accounting technology tools.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in operational accounting, financial reporting, month-end close management, and process improvement initiatives while partnering cross-functionally with business leaders.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day operational accounting activities including general ledger, reconciliations, accruals, and month-end close
• Oversee and review financial reporting packages to ensure accuracy and timeliness
• Lead accounting process improvements and help streamline workflows across the finance function
• Partner with operational and executive leadership to support business initiatives and financial decision-making
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff while fostering a collaborative team environment
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 4+ years of progressive accounting experience with ideally 2+ years of experience within public accounting
• Prior leadership or management experience preferred
• Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles
• Experience managing month-end close processes in a mid-sized or growing organization
• Advanced Excel skills and ERP system experience required
• CPA or CPA-track preferred but not required
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
• Ability to work independently in a hybrid work environment
• Base salary up to $130,000 depending on experience
