Job summary

Sustainment in Austin, TX is hiring an Accounting Manager to run day-to-day accounting operations, own the month-end close, and ensure GL integrity. You will manage AP, AR, payroll, revenue recognition for commercial and government contracts, and produce the board-ready monthly reporting package.

You will optimize the finance stack (QBO, Ramp, Anrok) and lead audit support while partnering with CFO to scale processes and controls in a fast‑growing, DoD/industrial context.

Qualifications

• 4–6 years of progressive accounting experience, including 1–2 years owning a monthly close.
• Strong U.S. GAAP knowledge with internal controls; ability to escalate when needed.
• Public accounting or audit experience (Big 4 or national firm preferred).
• CPA or CPA candidate is preferred.
• Startup or high-growth company experience, ideally Series A/B.
• Hands-on experience with modern spend and tax automation tools.

Responsibilities

Job Overview:

We are hiring an Accounting Manager to run our day-to-day accounting operations. Our finance stack is built and operating — QuickBooks Online, Ramp, and Anrok, with documented processes and a clean close. Your job is to run it well, keep it accurate, and improve it as we scale. You will own the month-end close, general ledger integrity, and the transactional accounting cycle, reporting directly to the CFO. This is a hands‑on role for someone who takes pride in a fast, clean close and does not need to be told when the calendar is slipping.

For this position you must be local to Austin, TX and willing to be in office a minimum of 3 days a week.

What you'll own:

• Run the monthly close end to end. Own the close calendar and deliver financials within 10 business days, with a path to tightening that as you ramp.
• Own general ledger integrity, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and accruals.
• Manage the full transactional cycle: accounts payable, accounts receivable, expense management, and payroll accounting.
• Apply established revenue recognition policy across both commercial and government contracts, including billing and revenue schedules.
• Produce the monthly reporting package and supporting schedules that feed board and investor reporting.
• Own monthly budget vs. actuals analysis, partnering with budget owners to explain variances, identify key drivers, and incorporate changes into the next forecast.
• Administer and optimize our finance stack — QuickBooks Online for the GL, Ramp for spend and AP, Anrok for sales tax.
• Own sales tax compliance, including nexus monitoring, registrations, and filings across jurisdictions.
• Maintain and improve the documented accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls already in place.
• Prepare audit-ready schedules and support requests; serve as the primary preparer for the annual audit under CFO direction.
• Coordinate with external tax and compliance partners on filings and information requests.
• Identify what's slow, manual, or error-prone in the current process and fix it.

What you'll bring:

• 4–6 years of progressive accounting experience, including 1–2 years owning a monthly close.
• Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal controls, with the judgment to know when a transaction needs to elevate.
• Public accounting or audit experience (Big 4 or national firm preferred).
• CPA or CPA candidate preferred.
• Startup or high-growth company experience, ideally Series A/B.
• Hands‑on experience with QuickBooks Online and modern spend and tax automation tools. You are comfortable owning a finance stack and making it work harder.
• Fluency with AI tools, particularly Claude, for budget vs. actuals commentary, ad hoc analysis, and other finance workflows. You use AI as a default productivity tool, know how to prompt it effectively, and apply sound judgment in validating the output before relying on it.
• Multi‑state sales tax compliance experience, particularly for SaaS.
• Government or federal contract accounting exposure is a strong plus.
• Precision, deadline discipline, and follow‑through. You close on time and you catch your own errors.
• Direct communicator who works well with a small team and operates without heavy oversight.
