Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced accounting and financial analysis on moderately complex to complex tasks.
  • Prepare, review, and maintain accurate financial records, schedules, reconciliations, and reports.
  • Analyze financial data to identify discrepancies, trends, and issues needing review.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, general ledger activity, and reconciliations.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Support the preparation of financial statements and management reports.
  • Ensure transactions comply with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Research and resolve complex accounting and reporting issues.
  • Provide accounting guidance to internal departments.
  • Assist with audits by preparing schedules and responses to auditor requests.
  • Review processes and suggest improvements for accuracy and internal controls.
  • Work independently while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • May provide guidance or leadership to accounting staff.

Senior Accountant – Public Sector

We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join a well-established public-sector organization. This position is ideal for an accounting professional with strong technical accounting skills who is comfortable independently managing complex financial assignments, performing detailed analysis, and supporting accurate financial reporting.

The Senior Accountant will perform advanced professional accounting work involving the preparation, analysis, reconciliation, and maintenance of financial records and reports. This position requires sound judgment, strong analytical skills, and a thorough understanding of accounting principles and practices, particularly within a governmental, municipal, or public-sector environment.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field preferred.
  • Several years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience.
  • Governmental, municipal, special district, or other public-sector accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and accounting practices.
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, and account analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial/accounting systems.
  • Ability to independently research and resolve accounting discrepancies.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and accuracy.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a seasoned accounting professional who can step into a higher-level accounting role and work with limited supervision. They are comfortable analyzing complex financial information, researching discrepancies, preparing accurate financial reports, and collaborating with multiple departments.

Previous experience working within a city, county, water district, special district, government agency, or other public-sector organization would be highly valuable.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced accounting and financial analysis involving moderately complex to complex assignments.

  • Prepare and review journal entries, general ledger activity, and account reconciliations.
