Job summary

The County of Hawai‘i is seeking an experienced accountant to handle assigned components of a fiscal program in Hilo, ensuring compliance with standard accounting practices and directives. This role supports payroll, budgeting, and financial reporting for the department.

Ideal candidates have a bachelor’s degree with accounting coursework, plus one year of professional accounting or auditing experience and demonstrated supervisory aptitude.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with twelve (12) semester credit hours in accounting and/or auditing courses.
• One (1) year of professional accounting or auditing experience involving maintenance or examination of accounting records and the preparation/analysis of financial statements.
• Demonstrated supervisory aptitude, as applicable to the position. (Immediate vacancy requires supervisory aptitude).

Responsibilities

• Maintains expenditure, object, cost, and control ledgers, registers, journals, and other records in a fiscal operation.
• Participates in collection, compilation, classification, evaluation, and reporting of fiscal data.
• Classifies, codes, and posts to accounts and funds, covering encumbrances, expenditures, and revenues.
• Oversees payroll processing for the department; prepares labor reports (e.g., job costing).
• Prepares personnel documents and transactions; provides information on personnel laws, rules, and CB provisions.
• May supervise lower-level personnel concerned with fiscal control records; provides training as required.
• Gathers data and performs studies on financial administration; makes recommendations.
• Maintains records for expenditures and fund balances for federal-aid reimbursements.
• Verifies and analyzes financial data; prepares financial statements and reports.
• Participates in annual budget preparation and may join budget hearings.
• May operate a vehicle to perform work-related duties.
