Job summary

The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) in Baton Rouge, LA is seeking an Accountant 1-3 to manage financial reporting, implement internal controls, and coordinate bank reconciliations. This role supports public sector accounting operations and requires attention to detail and integrity.

Appointment may be probational up to 48 months. Salary ranges from $21.63 to $26.50 per hour depending on level, with standard 8:00 am–4:30 pm schedule and potential shifts.

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience in accounting, auditing, financial operations, payroll, or banking; OR six years of full-time experience in any field plus twenty-four semester hours in accounting; OR a bachelor’s degree with twenty-four semester hours in accounting; OR a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, or statistics; OR an advanced degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, quantitative methods, or statistics; OR CPA license.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements and maintains internal controls to ensure adequate treatment of documents and the appropriate application of rules, regulations and procedures as they relate to liquidation of agency liabilities.
  • Daily processes stop payments, positive pay exception decisions, reverse positive pay decisions, Centralized Bank Reconciliation System exceptions, and reconciles bank file transmissions.
  • Prepares financial reports used by DCFS Administration, the Legislative Auditor's Office, Division of Administration, and the State Treasurer's Office monthly, quarterly and annually.
  • Participates in the development, design and implementation of new automated information systems and enhancements to existing systems.
  • Performs duties necessary for the smooth operations of the Department.

Join Our Team at DCFS: Accountant 1-3

This is a highly responsible professional accounting work in managing the fiscal reporting activities in DCFS. The work involves office responsibility for implementing financial operational policies and procedures, maintaining and controlling bank reconciliations and coordinating the activities of the Bank Reconciliation Unit to ensure and provide accurate and timely financial reporting.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Three years of experience in accounting, auditing, financial operations, payroll, or banking; OR
  • Six years of full-time experience in any field plus twenty-four semester hours in accounting; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree with twenty-four semester hours in accounting; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, or statistics; OR
  • An advanced degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, quantitative methods, or statistics; OR
  • Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
Experience Substitution

Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

Job Duties

Position-Specific Details
Appointment Type

This position may be filled as a probational appointment or a job appointment that may last up to 48 months. Job appointments may convert to probational appointments. Also, it may be filled as a detail and promoted within 12 months or by promotion of a permanent classified employee.

Career Progression

This position may be filled as an Accountant 1-3 depending on experience.

Compensation
  • Accountant 1 (AS 614) $21.63 hourly
  • Accountant 2 (AS-615) $23.14 hourly
  • Accountant 3 (AS-617) $26.50 hourly
Work Schedule

Typically, work hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday. Flexible work schedules are available after meeting certain criteria and is dependent upon the position you are applying for. Some positions require working shifts.
