University of Missouri-Columbia is seeking an Accommodations Coordinator within the Disability Center to implement accommodations for students with disabilities, coordinate notetaking, alternate formats, communication access, and accessible furniture. You will train student employees and collaborate across campus to ensure efficient services and confidentiality.
The role includes managing eligibility, providing support sessions, and working with faculty and vendors on captioning and adaptions.
The Disability Center serves as a leader in advocating for equal access of Mizzou's students with disabilities. Through collaboration, we facilitate the provision of accommodations to students, offer educational programming, and provide consultation to the university community.
The Accommodations Coordinator for the Disability Center is responsible for coordination and implementation of specific accommodations for students with disabilities, peer notetaking, alternative textbook formats, communication access, and accessible furniture. The Accommodation Coordinator meets with students with temporary disabilities to establish eligibility for accommodations and provides help sessions to both students and faculty on the utilization of our student database (myAccess/AIM). The Accommodations Coordinator hires, trains and supervises student employees, and functions as a team member within the Disability Center in the development and implementation of processes necessary to accomplish the goals and philosophy of the department and the University.
Specific Responsibilities:
Coordination of Accommodations:
The Accommodations Coordinator holds primary responsibility for not only coordinating specific accommodations, but also reviewing and making recommendations to change office processes related to these accommodations to ensure efficiency and best practices in their work.
Specific accommodation coordination and tasks include, but are not limited to:
Alternative Formats
Coordinate with the IT Accessibility Center to ensure timely delivery of alternative formats to students.
Coordinate acquisition and disposition of textbooks and other materials requiring conversion, working through the bookstore, publisher resources and other entities.
Work with external vendors to ensure timely conversion of Braille and tactile materials.
Notetaking Assistance
Provide students with access to approved notetaking software; develop and offer help sessions to support students in effectively utilizing programming.
Maintain regular communication with all assigned volunteer peer note-takers and eligible students to ensure that the process is operating smoothly and consistently.
Problem-solve with students and faculty on issues related to notetaking accommodations.
Oversee recruitment, assignment and training of note-takers for eligible students, utilizing email communication to instructors, presentations to classes and other appropriate methods.
Monitor uploaded notes for timeliness, quality and consistency.
Coordinate the compensation process for all note takers, using appropriate assessment tools.
Communication Access
Schedule services with different captioning and interpreting vendors depending on structure of academic courses
Communicate with instructors, staff, and vendors regarding captioning and interpreting needs each semester
Receive and check accuracy of invoices received for communication access services provided before forwarding on for payment
Accessible Furniture and Equipment
Work with Campus Facilities and building coordinators across campus to assess current classroom furniture and placement to meet student accommodations.
Supervise process to loan accessible equipment, such as FM Systems, to students
Student Employee Supervision
Manage the full employment cycle for student employees, including recruitment, hiring, supervision, scheduling, performance review, and separations
Collaborate with the office support assistant and other staff on student employee tasks and assignments to ensure proper support and coverage
Temporary Accommodations:
Through an interactive process with students with temporary disabilities, the accommodations coordinator determines eligibility for and identifies appropriate temporary accommodations. Includes the review and interpretation of third‑party documentation; maintaining confidential student files, records, and correspondence; and consultation with faculty regarding the implementation of accommodations.
Additional Tasks:
Offer help sessions to students and faculty on the utilization of the student database (myAccess/AIM) and the implementation of specific accommodations
Contribute to the overall success of the Disability Center by performing other essential duties as assigned.
8:00am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday
This position may require evening and weekend hours supporting activities and programs within the department. Occasionally division and campus projects may require additional hours outside of your normal schedule.
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Experience working with individuals with disabilities, particularly with students in higher education settings; working knowledge of ADAAA, 504, FERPA, and other relevant laws, as well as of best practices with respect to disability services in higher education. Demonstrated flexibility and proven interpersonal experience working in a professional environment, with experience interacting with faculty and with student populations; excellent written and verbal communication skills; working knowledge of assistive technology and universal design principles; and, demonstrated strong computer and analytical skills.
Also: a proven ability to effectively deal with complex and varying tasks; excellent interpersonal skills and tact; strong problem solving skills and ability to exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility; demonstrated strong organizational skills; a demonstrated high degree of accuracy and attention to detail; ability to work under pressure and with constant interruptions; must be able to maintain strict confidentiality; ability to prioritize workload based on demands of students and the academic schedule; ability to work effectively in a student centered environment; demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team; supervisory experience.
Salary Range: $17.40-$21.00 per hour
