Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake interviews and review medical, psychological, and neuropsychological information to determine eligibility for accommodations.
  • Identify appropriate accommodations based on the disability and program requirements.
  • Provide referrals to neuropsychological testing and to other clinicians as indicated.
  • Promote student achievement by improving academic skills through one-on-one learning consultations and group presentations.
  • Support the Office of Academic Support and clinical partners in implementing accommodations and engaging in professional development.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Counseling/related field
Master’s degree preferred
Counseling coursework preferred
Formal training in disabilities services

Job Description:

SUMMARY:

The Accessibility and Learning Specialist is a member of the Office of Academic Support, which is housed in the Office of Medical School Student Affairs at The Warren Alpert Medical School (the Medical School). The Office of Medical School Student Affairs supports medical students throughout medical school, in part by fostering an open, caring, and inclusive learning environment and serving as a responsive resource for medical students. In addition to medical students, students in the Program in Liberal Medical Education and students in Masters’ Degree Program that fall under the medical school umbrella (the Gateways in Medicine program) are also supported in their academic achievement. The Specialist conducts student intake interviews and reviews medical, psychological, and neuropsychological information to determine eligibility for accommodations and identifies what accommodations are appropriate based on the disability and program requirements. They support the Medical School, and its clinical partners in implementing those accommodations. In addition, the Specialist provides referrals to neuropsychological testing and to other clinicians as indicated. The Specialist also promotes student achievement by improving student academic skills through one-on-one learning consultations as well as group presentations. The Specialist engages in professional development and other projects/activities as needed to support the Office of Academic Support.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education, Rehabilitation Services or similar program plus 5-7 years of experience working with students with disabilities in a college setting Masters preferred.
  • Counseling coursework preferred.
  • Experience: or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Formal training and education in disabilities services
  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Knowledge of ADA and of various learning disabilities
  • Experience with reviewing and evaluating documentation to determine accommodations in higher education or employment settings.
Job Competencies
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Thorough understanding of varied neuropsychological tests and their meaning
  • Previous experience in similar role preferred
  • High degree of discretion
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
  • Knowledge and understanding of ADA regulations, guidelines, and standards as applicable to a higher education or academic program.
  • Effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing demands. Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
