Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required for Academic Advisor I. A master's degree in Counseling, Higher Ed. Leadership, Student Personnel Services, or related field required for Academic Advisor II.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate as needed and work with diverse populations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with navigating pre-health curriculums and prerequisite requirements.
  • Provide advising and registration support during first-year and transfer orientation.
  • Offer group and one-on-one advising, plus career development guidance.
  • Support administration for the WSU Phoenix program, including scheduling and communications.
  • Maintain thorough notes in the STARS advising system and participate in program planning.

Academic Advisor I/II

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Academic Advisor I/II at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

The University Advising Center seeks an Academic Advisor I/II to join its dedicated team of professionals. We deliver high quality, student-centered, and culturally responsive support to students. The successful candidate’s primary responsibility will be to support the academic and professional development needs of pre-health students from onboarding at New Student Orientation, through pre-requisite course planning and tracking, and professional school application preparation. Additionally, the candidate’s secondary responsibilities will include supporting the advising and administrative functions of the WSU Phoenix (grade forgiveness) program for all participating schools, colleges, and units. The Academic Advisor I/II will report to the Senior Director of University Advising.

Essential Functions: The advisor is responsible for assisting students with navigating the transition to Wayne State including advising/registration support during first year and transfer orientation, one-on-one advising and group advising, programming to support career decision-making and professional development, helping students assess their academic and personal needs, and making appropriate referrals as needed. This position will assist students exploring alternative career pathways when needed. Responsibilities include:

  • Create a welcoming environment of support and belonging.
  • Assist students with navigating pre-health curriculums and the co-curricular requirements for application to professional programs.
  • Continuous support for pre-nursing/pre-health students including one-on-one advising, group advising, and topic-specific workshops.
  • Provide additional support for students who are at academic risk and create a plan for academic recovery.
  • Provide additional support for career changers who need to explore other academic and career opportunities.
  • As part of the Pre-Med and Health Science Team, help create and coordinate programs, information sessions, and open houses that support the unique needs of pre-professional students.
  • Support the unit with New Student Orientation (transfer and FTIAC) duties including scheduling, training, and presentation content.
  • Help with advising and administrative duties related to the WSU Phoenix program including application processing, hold placement, tracking, and communications
  • Help students balance life commitments with school and navigate the educational process.
  • Make referrals to student support offices as needed.
  • Keep detailed notes in the STARS student advising platform.
  • Participate in strategic planning focused on pre-professional students.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree required for Academic Advisor I. A master's degree in Counseling, Higher Ed. Leadership, Student Personnel Services, or related field required for Academic Advisor II. Minimum of two years working in higher education.

Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Ability to collaborate as needed.

Experience working with diverse populations.

Ability to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.

Experience advocating student needs, goals, and concerns with colleagues to create an environment of thriving and persistence.

Strong desire to promote educational achievement.

Competence in decision making, organization and time management skills with a high attention to detail.

Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.

Excellent computer skills and the ability to adapt to new software programs and online resources.
