Job summary

Georgia State University is seeking multiple Academic Advisor I positions at the Atlanta Campus to provide individual and group advisement, assist departments with academic plans, and interpret university policies for enrollment and evaluation.

A successful candidate will help improve graduation rates, support student success with attention to detail, and multitask in a growing academic setting. Full-time with excellent benefits.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education/experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience presenting to groups or with group facilitation.
  • Experience following up on problems until resolution.
  • Experience with student retention or student affairs programs is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Advise prospective and current students about academic requirements and course selection.
  • Maintain and update student files; modify records as needed.
  • Analyze readmission and financial aid reinstatement requests; provide retention services.
  • Assist in conducting orientation sessions for groups of incoming students.
  • Audit student records for curriculum, major, and graduation requirements.
  • Evaluate transfer credits and determine transferability.
  • Monitor retention, progression, and graduation of assigned students.
  • Coordinate communications to students regarding scheduling and core/major requirements.

Enrollment Services: University Advisement Center: The University Advisement Center is seeking to recruit multiple Academic Advisor I positions to conduct individual and group student academic advisement, to assist departments/units with verbal or written academic plans, and to interpret and implement university policies and procedures in the areas of student enrollment and evaluation. We are searching for staff who can find ways to continue to improve some of the fastest-growing graduation rates in the nation. A successful candidate for this position must be dedicated to encouraging student success with high attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.

Here Is What You Will Do:
  • Advises prospective and current students about academic requirements and selection of courses using advising systems and technologies. Disseminates information on university policies and procedures to faculty, parents, students, etc.
  • Maintains students' files that are updated throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary.
  • Analyzes and processes requests for readmission from academic exclusion and financial aid reinstatements; provides retention services for students who are part of the Academic Improvement Program.
  • May assist in conducting orientation sessions for groups of incoming students.
  • Audits student records for curriculum, major, and graduation requirements.
  • Evaluates and determines transfer credits; research course descriptions to determine transferability.
  • Compares transcripts with entrance and graduation requirements and advises students on appropriate actions.
  • Refers students with academic discrepancies to proper officials for further action.
  • Assists in the preparation of special reports relating to enrollment and related matters.
  • Evaluates and maintains student records for degree requirements using an academic evaluation system. Monitors student registration activities and academic performance/progress.
  • Coordinates communications to students regarding course scheduling, core and major requirements, academic resources, etc.
  • Determines award recipients based on academic performance. Reviews course adjustment forms and petitions for readmission of students. Processes applications for state certifications, etc.
  • Monitors and tracks the retention, progression, and graduation of all students within the assigned population.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
We will hire multiple advisors from this announcement for the Atlanta Downtown, Dunwoody and Online campus (which is housed on the Clarkston campus).: Minimum Requirement:
  • Bachelor's degree; or a combination of education and related experience.
Preferred Hiring Requirements: Preference may be given to those with a bachelor's degree and one year of experience working with student retention or student affairs programs.
