Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus either 6 months as Academic Advisor I at GSU or three years of related experience.
  • Master’s degree and three years' experience in student retention preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience presenting to groups or with group facilitation.
  • Experience following up on problems until resolution.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Banner and student tracking applications such as Grades First, EAB or Degree Works or similar product.
  • Experience with transfer articulation.

Responsibilities

  • Advises prospective and current students about academic requirements and course selection.
  • Disseminates information on university policies and procedures to faculty, parents, students, etc.
  • Maintains students' files updated throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary.
  • Analyzes and processes readmission requests and reinstatements; provides retention services for students in the Academic Improvement Program.
  • Conduct orientation sessions for groups of incoming students.
  • Audits student records for curriculum, major, graduation requirements.
  • Evaluates transfer credits and determines transferability.
  • Coordinates communications to students regarding scheduling, core/major requirements, resources.
  • Determines awards recipients based on academic performance.
  • Teach or co-teach in GSU 1010 courses.
  • Monitors retention, progression and graduation of assigned students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Student Advising Services: University Advisement Center

The University Advisement Center is seeking to recruit multiple Academic Advisor II positions to assist academic departments/units with verbal or written academic plans, advisement interpretation and implementation of university policies and procedures in the areas of student enrollment and evaluation. This position provides information to and advises both enrolled and prospective students regarding the academic programs offered by the University or a specific department, including requirements for admission and retention through graduation; may coordinate the work of entry level academic advisors.

Here Is What You Will Do
  • Advises prospective and current students about academic requirements and selection of courses.
  • Disseminates information on university policies and procedures to faculty, parents, students, etc.
  • Maintains students' files updated throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary.
  • Analyzes and processes requests for readmission from academic exclusion, and financial aid reinstatements; provides retention services for students who are part of the Academic Improvement Program
  • Conduct orientation sessions for groups of incoming students.
  • Audits student records for curriculum, major, graduation requirements.
  • Evaluates and determines transfer credits; research course descriptions to determine transferability.
  • Compares transcripts with entrance and graduation requirements and advises students on appropriate actions.
  • Refers students with academic discrepancies to proper officials for further action.
  • Assists in the preparation of special reports relating to enrollment and related matters.
  • Evaluates and maintains student records for degree requirements using academic evaluation system. Monitors student registration activities and academic performance/progress.
  • Coordinates communications to students regarding course scheduling, core and major requirements, academic resources etc., etc.
  • Determines awards recipients based on academic performance. Reviews course adjustment forms and petitions for readmission of students. Processes applications for state certifications, etc.
  • Teach or co-teach in GSU 1010 courses.
  • Monitors and tracks the retention, progression and graduation of all students within assigned population.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
We will hire multiple advisors from this announcement for the Atlanta Downtown, Dunwoody, Alpharetta, Decatur, and Online campus (which is housed on the Clarkston campus).
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree and either 1) 6 months experience as “Academic Advisor I” at GSU (University Advisement Center or other GSU advising department) or 2) three years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience.
Preferred Hiring Requirements
  • Preference may be given to those who possess a Master's degree and three years' experience working with student retention or student affairs programs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience presenting to groups or with group facilitation
  • Experience following up on problems until resolution
  • Proficiency with Excel, Banner and student tracking applications such asGrades First, EABor Degree Works or similar product

Location: Atlanta Campus

Shift: M-F, 8:30AM-5:15PM

Salary: $50,100

Pay Grade: 18

FLSA Status: Exempt
