Job summary

The New School is seeking a Student Success Academic Advisor for the School of Drama within the College of Performing Arts. You will provide holistic academic guidance, support registration, and connect students with campus services.

Reporting to the Director, Student Success Advising, you will help students meet degree requirements, navigate university policies, and collaborate with faculty and program directors. This is a Local 1205 Professional Unit position.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience with a focus on student engagement and advising.
  • Experience working with dramatic arts programs (acting, playwriting, directing) is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication abilities.
  • Proven judgment and critical thinking for guiding students’ academic and career paths.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; ability to learn new applications.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 40 pounds occasionally.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver developmental advising to students to support academic/artistic progress.
  • Maintain and update student records in institutional systems (Banner, DegreeWorks, Starfish).
  • Use critical thinking to help students chart paths to academic and professional goals.
  • Assist students with navigating obstacles to achieve academic goals.
  • Cultivate relationships with administrators and faculty for timely communication of student needs.
  • Collaborate with program directors and faculty on academic planning and program meetings.
  • Explain university policies on student status, transfer credits, and degree requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with FERPA and Title IX policies.
  • Participate in orientation, career services, recruitment, student life, and graduation activities.
  • Represent Student Success at events outside normal hours.
