Job summary

University of Michigan is seeking an Academic Advisor/Counselor at UM-Flint in a hybrid, full-time capacity. You will manage an assigned student caseload, advise on degree requirements, and support retention and outreach initiatives across the College of Arts, Sciences, & Education.

The role reports to the CASE Director of Student Services and requires a bachelor’s degree with experience in academic advising and data-driven program assessment. A master’s degree is preferred.

  • 15% Recruitment: participate in prospective-student recruitment and refer students to resources; maintain campus relationships.
  • 10% Advising Support and Collaboration: coordinate with departmental advisors and Student Success Center; attend orientation sessions.

ACADEMIC ADVISOR/COUNSELOR INTERMEDIATE (Hybrid)

Job Summary

We are seekinga full-time Academic Advisor/Counselor Associate/Intermediate in the UM-Flint College of Arts, Sciences, & Education. We are committed to investing in academic advisors to contribute to our recruitment, retention, and degree-completion goals. As an Academic Advisor/Counselor, you will manage an assigned student caseload andsupport students through degree completion.

Reports to the CASE Director of Student Services.

This position is a full-time 40 hours per week at 100% effort.

Responsibilities*

65% Student Interaction/Advising

Advise students on course selection, graduation requirements, co-curricular opportunities, and student rights/responsibilities

Work systematically with students to create, monitor, assess and update course schedules and degree-completion plans

10% Planning and Assessment

Use technology and data management to support the implementation and assessment of retention and student outreach programs

15% Recruitment

Participate in prospective-student recruitment for the University

Accept referrals from the campus community regarding student needs and issues and follow up directly with students

Maintain relationships with academic and student affairs offices to ensure that students and faculty advisors are aware of resources, workshops, and support systems on campus

Intensively monitor and engage with students experiencing academic and/or financial difficulties, including those on academic and/or financial aid probation

10% Advising Support and Collaboration

Maintain a close working relationship with departmental advisors, and the Student Success Center staff and director, to ensure seamless advising services across campus

Attend new student orientation sessions and University academic advising meetings

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree in a related profession such as Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Student Affairs or other relevant disciplines or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Two or more years of relevant experience working with students in an academic setting

Understanding of data assessment and quality improvement techniques

Desired Qualifications*

Master's degree preferred

Knowledge of Web Focus, Banner, Student Information Systems (SIS), and Degree Works

Knowledge of University policies and practices

Responsibilities:

65% Student Interaction/Advising

  • Provides academic advising services to current students, potential majors, minors, and others;utilizes confidential information and conducts confidential conversations to provide these services.
  • Advises students on course selection and distribution requirements; provides assistance to students to ensure their academic, personal and professional success.

35% Student Referral and Outreach

  • Accepts referrals regarding student needs and issues and contacts students for advising meetings.
  • Refers students to appropriate university resources as warranted, and follows-up on these referrals.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related profession such as Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Student Affairs or other relevant disciplines or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Less than two years of relevant experience, comprised of one or more years working with students, preferably at the collegiate level, and/or less than two years of academic advising, or similar student-facing experience.
  • Understanding of data assessment and quality improvement techniques

Posting Salary range is $37,800 - $47,200.
