Job description

Academic Advisor and Senior Academic Advisor

Kansas State University seeks a student-centered Academic Advisor and Senior Academic Advisor for the College of Agriculture. These positions will provide comprehensive academic advising to students, guiding them through their academic journey, helping meet graduation requirements, and advising on career goals. Responsibilities include creating personalized academic plans, monitoring progress, and promoting additional academic opportunities such as minors, certificates, and graduate programs. The Senior Academic Advisor will also provide leadership in training and mentoring new advisors.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provide academic advising from recruitment to graduation, assisting students with degree requirements, course selection, and academic policies.
  2. Develop onboarding materials and provide academic guidance to students.
  3. Assist students in developing academic plans, advising on course sequencing, enrollment, and degree completion, explaining program requirements, and updating progress each semester.
  4. Communicate important academic deadlines, expectations, and policies.
  5. Help students with special circumstances such as withdrawals, late drop appeals, and reinstatement.
  6. Support students facing academic or personal challenges by connecting them with campus and community resources.
  7. Develop strategies to enhance student success, retention, and engagement, ensuring awareness of support services.
  8. Lead informational sessions, workshops, and presentations for prospective and current students.
  9. Contribute to team efforts in developing programs supporting student success.
  10. Participate in professional development activities to stay current and improve advising practices.
  11. Senior Advisor: Collaborate with the Assistant Director to train and mentor new advisors.

What You’ll Need to Succeed
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and one year of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of academic advising experience at a higher education institution.
  • Strong knowledge of academic programs, policies, and student support services.
  • Ability to provide individualized advising while maintaining confidentiality and supporting diverse student needs.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Experience with advising platforms and data tools to monitor student progress.
  • Familiarity with enrollment management systems (e.g., Banner, PeopleSoft).
  • Problem-solving skills and a student-centered approach.
  • Knowledge of FERPA regulations and record management best practices.
  • Commitment to fostering a student-centered environment.
